[BTS] Civ IV Newbie Succession Game - Monarch - Beginning now!

Hi guys,

Looking to get some signups from around three other people, perhaps more if the interest is there.

So, this game is designed to be a learning aid for those of us reading exciting stories from Civ veterans but unable to execute such masterfully constructed plans ourselves - yet!

We will forego any exciting variants - there will be enough going on with our hilariously bad decision making, and variants are for experienced players.

Map settings pretty standard

Difficulty: Monarch
Map: Donut-Ocean
Map Size: Standard
Speed: Epic
Tech Trading: Off
Leaders: Restricted
Vassals: Off
Huts: Off
Events: Off

Interested players - please confirm
-Dhalphir - confirmed
-BaII - confirmed
-Brian Shanahan - confirmed
-Hart - tentative
-Tasunke - confirmed

The best way to learn is to partner with a veteran that you'd communicate well with and play a multiplayer game. If your aim is to learn how to play multiplayer, anyway. The best way to find a veteran you'd fit well with is to lurk their games and make posts.

I'm currently lurking DMOC in PB14 but I'd love to get some playtime in some SGs myself as they look like a ton of fun, so this is something to do as well.

I would be interested in join in, as a green player, but i would recommend, Monarch Difficulty.

I actually think that this is a good idea, although I can't make the time commitment. SGs aren't as popular as they used to be around here, but I think that if the players communicate well, they can be a great learning tool, as well as fun.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Everyone can't make the time :D

Well, sounds like Ball is pretty keen to join, so if there is an experienced player who feels like taking a couple of newer players under their wing (so to speak) and playing, I can get something started!

you'd probably get more interest if you post in the main civ forum, this isn't read as well now
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

For a succession game you will find yourself well able to handle levels above your personal games, due to a) having more time per turn, b) the general idea of posting plans and turn reports focusing your play, and c) the feedback and ideas from other players.

I would suggest at least four players in the succession game, because in a three player game if one person drops out the game will likely die before a replacement can be found.

The most important rule with any succession game is the 24/48 hour rule, 24 hours from posting of the last player's save to claim your save and sketch a plan and 48 hours to play, report and post the save for the next player. This keeps the game moving at a nice clip (keeping interest high) and allows for all players to properly follow and analyse the game.

I'd be happy to play in one, though my BtS skills are rusty through lack of use (I've almost exclusively been playing EitB of FfH the last two years), though I can still comfortably beat noble.

Though I'd probably not be the best choice for an experienced player.

I'll join this for as long as I can (which might not be long, depending on when this game gets going).

With how chill that game is supposed to be, I can't imagine you wouldn't have time for both, especially if we get four players and can divide the turns quite a lot.
