Seven, a better example would be the case where you are at size 6 and you have 26 or more food in the food box. In that case tiles worked is 3,4,4,... and you are converting 3 labour turns (say 6fh) to 3 food at size 3 - which is a good deal even before you consider the return on founding the city one turn earlier.
But then, unless you are (un?)lucky enough to have a breakeven food setup with your three best tiles, you lose 2fh into the settler when you grow due to the weird mechanics of growth under stagnation. I mean it can be good but it's often not.
Btw I admit the situation I described on quick doesn't directly apply to normal speed, but in that situation you are usually not wanting to make that fh for food trade, because the hardest part is building the worker in 1t; growing back a size every turn is comparatively easy.

I like this discussion and topic
In practise you face very seldomly a situation where you are about to grow onto so good tiles that waiting is clearly superior (if you have an unused 6/0 tile...) or cities are so good that they can keep growing instantly multiple times in a row as in 7's example (one immediate growth and two unused 4/0 tiles should already be enough though..).
Anyways, this is a good reminder that just blindly following thumb rules of experienced players only gets you so far..

You're right - I didn't take this in to account. I've noticed this, but I'm not sure how it works... so ... how does it work?
You lose 2f when you grow under stagnation?

So, take this as a challenge. You just explained exactly what has to happen in the quick speed (PBEM) example, so that means you know exactly how much food surplus you need on every turn to make that MM work.
Would you care to explain what the minimum resources are to make that MM functional are? Like, to grow from size 3>4>5>6 , after slaving from size 6 you need 7, 10, 11, 11 food to grow on each turn. What are the minum resources and tile improvements for the perfect cycle?

Can someone remind me how this exactly worked? Let's say I whip the settler and end up with
a) 25/26
b) 26/26
c) 27/26 food in the box.

- You finish the worker
- You finish the worker and grow to size 4 [with 13 food in the box if granary present]
- You finish the worker to size 4 [with 14 food in the box if granary present]

Except for SP, naturally, where AIs go missionary-mad and spread their religion like herpes at Comic-Con.

Oooh, Oooh, let me try - you need a city with +10f surplus spread over a maximum of three tiles.

Does that take into account what each new tile can do though, or about tile swapping between cities?
