I don't know the exact dimensions of this map. When I tried Seven's flying camera trick, I failed miserably...

Turn 54
Seeing that nice little fish island that BowAivo have reminds me that we need to get a city in our own 1-tile island for the ic routes. AH finished and we have horses clearly in our sphere of influence, but no real plans to settle that area in the immediate future. We're saving money for a couple turns before we switch on Writing (or maybe Sailing if we decide to go that route). I'm going to continue east with Siuan to see what we can see around GG lands.
We have two workers on each animal in our borders, so we'll finish both pastures next turn. Then I'll move the two southern workers to farm the corn for Bad Econ, which I believe will grow on T59 to work the gold again. The two northern workers will probably build another cottage than start paving the way to our new city site. The worker that just got whipped in Silent Neighbor will go to mine the copper, so it gets connected on T61. We're playing a little risky here, but I think it's ok. Our power has been higher than GG's for a few turns now.

Some C&D
Not really, but just going over some recent score increases. BowAivo settled their third city last turn. GG settled their third city this turn. They finished turn last and then settled the city as soon as the new turn flipped. I don't know if they were trying to hide the fact that they were settling, but they also got a regular pop growth so CivStats shows their two score increases right next to each other. GG also switched their research to Pottery. I have to go back and look at the screenshots, but I think they spent a couple turns at 100% on masonry before making the switch. I wonder what's going on over there, but I think it's worthwhile to maintain research visibility on them. BowAivo continue to put 4 ep's against us. We should ask them to switch off once they get our graphs (in some 5 or 6 turns). They finished a tech this turn, along with Care Bears and EggHeads.

As long as I'm spamming the thread, here's the micro plan for the next few turns:
The food is off for SP (I was counting the sheep as 5-food instead of 4), but the settler still comes out the same turn. I'm sure there are other mistakes in there too.

Here's a draft for our next message to BowAivo:
Quote: Hi Aivo & Bow,
Thanks for your message, we're glad to hear that the NAP is in place! Let us know when you are ready to work out a border agreement. We don't think there will be any problems or tensions there. These maintenance costs are pretty steep, so we're planning on sticking near our capital for our next few cities.
As for other cooperation, we were thinking about going for Writing soon, so maybe Open Borders would be a good place to start. Is that something you are interested in? Could you also help us keep our scout alive by letting us know about any nearby animals that might threaten him? We want to get by your borders to continue exploring west. Is there a passage we can get through to your north that you could guide us to? Chat might be better for quick directions, you can reach Caledorn at {email} and Yossarian at {email}.
We are also interested in sharing map information with you. We just completed Animal Husbandry, so let us know if you need help locating your horses or copper. Our starts seem to have some similarities. We also have a 1-tile island south of our capital with a fish resource. Have you meet any other teams yet? The Glorious Gladiators are to our east.
Take care,
Blame Caledorn

Cal and I chatted and we decided to go ahead and send the message as is. We also talked about trade routes.

What do you think about that little 1-tile island south of us?
Caledorn
how much benefit would we get from settling there, traderoutewise?
YossarianLives
That island can be really good for us. It will give us +2 commerce for each trade route instead of +1, so every city will get an immediate +1 commerce boost
Caledorn
could you explain to me how the traderoute system works in giving +1 to all cities?
normally I would never consider settling on that island in a single player game
but if what you say here is correct, it's actually a good move to settle one city on an island like that
YossarianLives
Sure. Right now, every city connected to our trade network (so all three) get +1 commerce from trade. They are trading with one of the other cities in our empire. If we settle an offshore city, all our cities trading with that one will get +2 commerce instead of +1. Since that is the most any of our cities can get from a trade route, they will all trade with the off-shore city
Caledorn
there is a maximum to how many traderoutes a city can sustain as incoming trade routes?
or could one city potentially support (incoming) traderoutes from an unlimited number of cities?
YossarianLives
The way I understand it, there is no limit to trade within our empire. So, one offshore city can give the +2 trade routes to every mainland city. Foreign trade routes also give a bonus, but you can only trade with a foreign city once. So, connecting to BowAivo's empire would also give us +2 trade for each city they have. But if we have three cities and they only have 2, then only 2 of our cities get the bonus
That island city is especially good for us because it can work a fish (that Bad Econ can connect on the same turn the city is settled), and it can also work the gold when Bad Econ isn't able to
Caledorn
Right - that makes sense with my observations in the diplogame. It also explains quite handily what makes TGL such an immensely powerful wonder
YossarianLives
Yeah!
If we connect to BowAivo and get TGL, each of our cities would trade with the island, as well as one of BowAivo's cities for a total of +4 trade commerce in each city
Did I get it right?

Sounds good to me, but probably not worth it until you've got all your first ring cities up and running and/or currency. You need sailing, a galley and a settler so it's 150 hammers and ? beakers to set up, which is steep for a fishing village. It also really needs a lighthouse, so I guess it's a little way down the line?
Am I right in thinking it would give 3-commerce routes to BowAvio with open borders? Maybe you can get them to settle their island in return?

I missed a couple turn reports, but not too much is going on, so let's skip straight to T57.
Our scout was circling back around to find a northern passage past BowAivo, only to find that the recently settled city blocks our path! That's inconvenient. I'd really like to just DOW and pass through, but at the rate communication with them has been going, we'll waste more time waiting for them to ok that then we would just taking the long way around.
We're building a lot of quechuas while we grow out our cities. With two more completing this turn, we now own the #1 army in the world. We're switching to settlers in both Server Problems and Silent Neighbor when we grow next turn. The turn after, Bad Econ will grow onto the farmed corn and our gold, which will be worked from now on.
I'm sending two of our quechua back east, one in the north and one in the south, to uncover more GG land and hopefully find their next neighbor over. Ignore that C? sign, it's not a planned city location. I just forgot to delete it after I threw up a lot of tentative city spots to try to visualize the eastern dotmap.

No new email from BowAivo, but they must have at least read ours because Bowsling added me on Hangouts this morning:

We thought about a mob sort of style 11:48 AM

Loving your theme, btw 11:49 AM
I hope the Silent Neighbour isn't us, lol 11:49 AM

I'll try to catch him tomorrow and ask about their neighbor(s), us sending the scout through their borders (we'll have Writing for OB by the time he gets back down to Cosa Nostra), and also when can they take their EP spending off us.
