That's... pretty far
I would have gone 2E, 1SE of Rome on the plains hill. Share the gems and clams, new pigs, farmed-grassland-hill.

Definitely better, though I will point out that the farmed grass hill is a 1/1 tile. (The farm isn't even irrigated - but even if it was that's just as good as a forest.)

With the discovery of the sheep, I would definitely plant 2S of the lake clam. Previously I was debating that spot with the deer/clam spot to the west.
I would probably plant 1W of his current spot after that, on the PH. It's still kind of far but not ridiculously far as it is now. He'd trap the incense between the BFCs which is cool since desert incense is terrible anyway.

Okay...and now he's decided to go settle in the east instead while talking like he's been intending to do that the entire time?

I find it kind of adorable that B4ndit and Catwalk are, to even a tiny extent, entertaining the possibility that maybe the axe is just going for a friendly walk. Sorry guys.
To be constructive, I would say that "good" play would not have been to heavily defend the city, but it certainly would have been to make the city defensible in case of an emergency. If you just build a road connecting your cities, that goes a long way. Roads are good. And part of the reason people value putting cities closer together is exactly this.

Oh man, the T32 solo Axe attack is going to work, even on a map where everyone has copper insta-connected at their capital? Although if Cheater Hater keeps the city, it seems inevitable that he'll just lose it a few turns later when a chariot shows up.

That plant was pretty aggressive, especially without defense units.
