Quick question: is this something a Chromecast can do for you for $35?

No idea. How many hours of TV can Chromecast record and keep?

Edit: From what I could google, the answer is NO. However, if you have another PC with recorded TV, you can (with some jumping through hoops) cast your Windows Media Center recordings to your TV. That might be an option.

There is also this blog about this very subject. Interesting but the blogger finally says 'not going to happen (at present)'.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Miracast is a format, right? What's the implementation that's cheaper than Chromecast, which costs $35?

Update: Here is my current thinking ...
  1. computer case - Silverstone ML04B - $86
  2. power - Corsair CX500M - $55
  3. ram - Corsair 2x2GB - $48
  4. mother board - Gigabyte Micro ATX - $58
  5. HDD - WD Green 2TB - $83
  6. CPU - AMD 3.9Ghz Dual Core - $56
  7. TV tuner - Ceton InfiniTV 6 - $199 ... already ordered (see below)
  8. windows OS - Win something ... need to look at my current disk to see if I can use that
  9. DVD blu ray player - still thinking about this one
I think that the above parts go together. Am I overlooking anything?

Re the TV Tuner ... I went with a 'Ceton InfiniTV 6' that I have ordered from Amazon. It started at $300 (same as newegg) and dropped (and dropped) last weekend. I ended up ordering it at $199. A couple of days afterwards it was back up to $230 and now ... it is at $270. I finally managed to time a purchase when the price was in my favour.

motherboard is socket am3+ while cpu is socket fm2.
500w is way too much. the tpd of your cpu is 65w max.
on-board graphics really benefits from high frequency ram. 1866 is fine. 2133 is marginally better. no more, though.
is 2tb enough? maybe buy two or three wd red 2tb and raid them?

duh. Glad I asked about that. I'll have to revisit (again) the parts.

I actually found two 2Gb 1600s that came with my home PC (I upgraded to 4x4Gb) so I will be using those in the HTPC.

Thanks for looking over my specs and responding.

You can run AMD chips on a >150W supply. I'd recommend a 300W 80% gold (or whatever cert it is) to be safe.
