[No Players] Lurker thread, to lurk and chirp

Wow, Dreylin seems like a really enthusiastic player. I'm not old enough in the forum to have seen him play, but it seems he know what he's doing. Interesting.

Yeah, he played in PBEM1 and won that. He went AWOL due to RL issues a couple of years ago. I wouldn't really say he's a greens player, once brought up to speed on current meta ideas he is easily tier 4.

Thoughts on Commodore's third city, anyone? I'd probably settle it 1S for wheat inside borders instantly. Normal speed + barracks for culture means the wheat will take what, 15 turns to be inside his borders (+ you need to keep the workers there to improve when the border pops). That's too slow for a third city, even when his second one was pretty fast.

Ivory is not a tile that justifies settling like that. It's probably more aesthetic, due to not losing tiles between the cities (you can place a filler there way into the future, if needed, though), but it doesn't seem correct. And 1S also gives sheep, even if shared.

Well, either 1S or settle somewhere else entirely. It's tricky, because you need the copper, with no horses. But a third city with no food for 15 to 20 turns is really stopping the snow ball, not helping it.

And considering all the gold he has, wouldn't teching archery be a good trade off? You "waste" some beakers, but you get a way better third city in return, with sheep + pigs. Archers are enough to deter barbs and the map is too big to expect such an early attack from an opponent, I guess. And it's not like you'd delay copper forever...

Right now he's researching writing, which is not needed right now.

And just to kickstart yet another discussion, I wonder about the proposed cities in Dreylin's thread. Why settle a place with only foodplain farms as food, when you have quite a lot of options avaiable? FP farms take 7 worker turns to build at normal speed, right? You can get a sheep pasture in 4, way more efficient.

They are considering the coastal spot with sheep + shared sheep, which I think is way better. And I'm sure there are other better spots around.

Perhaps I'm missing a resource, because ctrl + r isn't active...

Yeah, I think you're right Ichabod. Archery's pretty cheap, he still hasn't found his southern neighbour's borders and besides, who, upon meeting Tokugwa, thinks: must rush!

Still it's not too bad, the copper is a good tile. He could get the barracks quick, chop +7t production for a worker, 5t for the granary and he's ready to grow on the wheat.

Re Dreylin's dotmap: The coastal spot has crabs too! Also, why not put his first city 1W, gets the sheep in the second ring and handy extra 1cpt too.

I like Gawdzak opening. He's a very good newcomer.

It's a pity that Mack and plako don't update...

By the way, REM and Adrien seem to be good guys. I think that picture Boldly posted is a bit too harsh. I also disagree with their play, but I don't think there's a need to put it this way.

Especially considering how well they are reacting to their map. Most of the players here would be damning the map maker for that start, what with tundra and snow at second city reach and that nasty chokepoint that GJ has, that comes with a better Capital to boot.

I don't disagree with you, it wasn't super nice. I like memes, what can I say? cool I love their enthusiasm. I was probably harder on them because I played out their start one evening and I know that they've missed an opportunity to snowball some with their opening. So, REM and Adriener, when you read this postgame I hope you don't take the criticism too harshly.

As for the map, they have every right to complain. Tundra sucks. They're obviously nicer folks than I am. wink

I know you didn't do it to hurt them, but it's not nice to open the lurker thread and seeing that sort of thing. It's easier to take things more seriously when they are about you.
