[PB22 Spoiler] Joey and Borsche puke on the funny pages

Goddamit I got the Researcher breakthrough event this turn, that gives you 15% towards a tech, on the turn I started towards Physics (!!) but then I couldn't pick an option b/c 2metra I think logged out at the same time. I PM'd Cal for a reload...
T204.
Gawdzak hasn't yet budged his bigass fleet forward on me on the Furungy front... it is currently 8 frigates, 14 galleons, and 1 privateer, with another frigate, privateer, and 2 galleons moving in to join it by next turn. I've got 12 frigates, 3 galleons, a caravel and a galley on hand... not quite enough, he could do some serious damage if he decides to move in on me. However, I think dtay also has a similar sized fleet as mine able to jump back in against Gawdzak if that happens. What I really need to be worried about is Gawdzak upgrading his frigates to ironclads before I take the Vikings' capital. Oh, by the way? I declared war on Furungy and moved in with a small stack of 20ish units - a mix of rifles, knigths, and cannons - with more to be delivered via boat later. Here's the situation there: He attacked out last turn, first sprinkling XP with a GG and then losing 6 Knights and 5 cats to kill a single rifleman at 8.8% odds. This is fine with me, I'd rather not have lost the rifle (but so it goes) but thinning out the city for me is actually a great service because it makes the collateral damage of my cannons far more effective. I will stop to heal next turn, with a medic, and then hit the city in earnest t206. A couple more rifles delivered via Galleon will shore up the stack in the meantime. There's also this nasty lil trick: I noticed a couple turns ago that Furungy got Astro, and then made a note to watch out for an upgrade to his galley that he had station in the bay for forever. And, lo and behold, here it is, able to fork two of my cities without moving a muscle. I had three Knights in this Galleon, hoping to snipe Birka when he moved troops out to last-stand at his capital, but I moved them back to defend my iceball and then upgraded my CG2 longbow at Oslo to another rifle, ouch my wallet. At the FSH front, I am moving forward as fast I can. The absurd 6-tile distance between the Korean first and second cities means that I need to use Galleons to shuffle troops around. This turn, I unloaded 15 units (rifles and cannons) in front of MCG, and next turn I will unload 18 more. So, I will attack T206, which should be an action-packed turn for sure. (same turn my peace treaty with Portugal expires, oh joy.) I also sent a stack of three knights to take Rose Bowl, which is now defended by just a single unupgraded longbow. Current city counts: Gavagai 49, Gawdzak 48, me 44, Plako 34, dtay 34. My distance maintenace, including inflation, is now at 265gpt - State Property is starting to look pretty attractive, although it would not be worth it without the Great Spy. How do I tech there AND Physics with Gawdzak about to get Assembly Line at any moment? Burn the GS from Physics? But then what's the point? Gavagai finally got the MoM last turn so he's probably the first-place scoreboard civ until the end of the game. OTOH, I got SM and this nice lil event, (thankfully with the reload it worked this time), worth just a bit over 1 turn worth of break-even research: Nobody even has SM yet, so I think I might just put two full turns into Physics then grab Steam Power with the rest of my cash. Gawdzak just got AL this turn (!!!) and fired a GA, but I'm gambling that with 4-move ironclads and Airships I should be able to deter any kind of Infantry invasion. He had only 67 gold this turn, basically getting the tech right on the dot, and is only able to save 1465gpt in his GA, which feels extremely low. I mean, I make over 1700gpt even without my GA? I don't think that's really his 0% slider rate... anyways, that's still only 13 rifle -> infantry upgrades per turn... which I wasn't thinking was a lot but... if he hits at the right place at the right time... maybe I just go for Steam Power now? Commodore, presumably because he's got all kinds of problems in his land, seeing how plako got a GG this turn, asked for a 2000 gold for 240 gpt loan - a reasonable rate that I'd ordinarily take - but unfortunately had to decline as I'm committed to my current tech plan. If he had asked 2 turns ago, I think I would have accepted and abandoned the Physics plan, but now it is too late.
Far out that's a nice event.

The grand irony of this map:
After our wars, Gavagai and I will control about the same area of the map and the same number of cities, yet he'll have twice as much land as I do. edit: added Gawdzak, who's in the same situation as I am land-wise compared to Gav. Notice that Gawdzak needs only two fleets to protects his borders between Gav, dtay, and myself, as his entire northeastern area is essentially backlines. Gav also only needs two fleets, one for his border with border with myself and Gawdzak on the east side and then just one for me in the west. He'll need to keep his guard up for plako soon though. I, on the other hand, need to maintain FOUR fleets to cover Portugal, my eastern border with Gavagai, the tri-point border, and then my southeastern border with Gawdzak. Man I need destroyers so badly...
T206 + T207.
Another downer day IRL, game not helping: I knew I wouldn't take the city in one turn no matter what (not enough quality hitters), but come on here. What the fuck. These guys have the most ridiculous RNG luck. Here's the status after my attack: Cleanup on T207 started with a bang. But finally, success!! Decent infra too, love getting forges and I'm surprised that they had an Academy. Also grabbed Wembley stadium with a musket on a Galleon. Extremely nice infra here!!! Portugal's gonna try to muscle there way over to me, with Ironclads guarding the Carracks I guess. I can finish Steamworks in 2T after Physics, get some Nav2 5-mover Ironclads over in about the same speed that they can get to me. Portugal isn't in Theocracy or Vassalage, so the only way they can get Nav1 is if they have a settled GG. Only three Korean cities left; I had to back away some of my boats because of ironclad horseshit (there was another one 2W of Soccer City - Portugal and Korea have OB now. ) but I still think I can finish the war in 5-6 more turns. Speaking of being finished in 5-6 more turns, the Vikings should be about that timeline too. I picked off another pike stack, and he did indeed use his Galleon to suicide three berserkers into my now CG2 Rifle-nee-longbow. It pays to pay attention, folks! The Vikings have 17 units left in their last city; I'll start delivering cannons and rifles next turn. I could use frigates to speed the process up, but I want to keep my Frigate stack where Gawdzak can see it. His fleet is something like 17 Galleons + 8 Frigates + 2 Privateers, mine is 18 Frigates + 3 Galleons + 1 Privateer. Domestic report: Gavagai and dtay got SM on T206, Steam Power plan abandoned. Like half of my cities (every city not finishing a unit at EOT T206) are now producing Research to finish Physics at EOT T207. I was afraid that Gavagai might try to bulb it to completion, but it looks like that didn't happen, whew. War weariness is finally starting to pop up... Claretin hasn't had the spare production to get a jail, unlike my other cities, so it is eating 7 WW unhappy to end up at a -2 deficit. The other two are because of stupid homeland unhappiness, moreso in Jelling than Vaskeras. The forge finishing in Vaskeras in 2T will take care of that problem at least. MoJ and Klurfville (I seriously disgust myself with my own city names, but then I guess that was the idea) are at happy-neutral because they do not have garrisons, which is easy enough to fix because I've recently been replacing my Gavagai-sphere archer/chariot garrisons with CG3 rifles.
T207.
Mostly all quiet... I got the Physics scientist, hurray, now here's to hoping my GPP dice rolls for my last 2 work out ok, heh. 3 turns to Steam Power... I could do it in 2 with more research builds, but that's not worth it I think. dtay gets Communism next turn, RIP spy. I unloaded a small stack of rifles + cannons outside of Furungy's last city, hoping that he'll attack out and speed up his demise. I'll take the city T210 at the latest, otherwise. The Korean front is getting tricky... 2metra is moving forward with his ironclads and now has a total of 10 carracks in his easternmost ports. I don't get what he's trying to accomplish... even if he can use his ironclads to ensure a safe + full payload from these Carracks, I'd still have over twice as many land-troops in the theatre and could cart them around with far, far superior mobility. I wardecced and offered a peace treaty, hopefully that's the end of this nonsense. Like, aren't you still at war with dtay dude? Maybe you should focus on that? Anyways, I'll take the next hooligan city T209, expecting little resistance as I think they will choose their Moai as a last stand.
T209.
2Metra is being stubborn again, refusing to accept my peace offer and sticking one of his ironclads in my face. Unfortunately for him, my frigates have a lot of XP and I have a lot of them (33 in total, although just 4 or 5 remaining in that sea) whereas he has just one more left, that I can see, and it had only 4 XP, taking Drill 1 for some insane reason. I'm fine with trading 1:1 if that's what you want, really! He's only got one more in the area, protecting a stack of 4 Carracks. Another 7 Carracks are defended by only 2 muskets and an axe in a fort, but unfortunately my galleons are a bit out of range for a few more turns... Meanwhile, the Inca have overshot Portugal incredibly in power. I'm guessing that dtay will be getting back in with the leaders soon, due to these guys' poor decision-making... Slow turn, sorry, but I think the next one will be more exciting. Furungy will get eliminated, I'm 90% sure, and I'll capture another city from Korea as well. Stay tuned for action! |
