So much for what I thought I knew. Turns out it is possible to conquer someone after Slavery and before Knights.

(December 3rd, 2015, 10:24)Mardoc Wrote: Yeah, you're right, Xenu. That said, maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but these deaths are coming as a surprise to me. General received wisdom around here is that Knights or later is the time to attack, because you need a tech lead or a massive production advantage to conquer and that's the first time you can meaningfully have a tech lead. It's hard to realize that's only true in combination with "and your targets keep up in a general way with Power and manage their army intelligently". Commodore losing to HA is a bit of a wake up call for me - I had previously thought that whips and logistics could stop any pre-medieval attack.

If I were in CH's shoes, I'd have expected Mack to get bogged down after taking half of DZ and give me lots of opportunities later on. I'd apparently have been wrong about that...

I'll respond here, with a graph from Commodore's thread:

Slavery doesn't much matter if you don't keep within hailing distance of your would-be invader. Commodore would have needed twice as many cities and three times the population to make up the military disparity in any meaningful time, which he didn't have because the invasion was already on the way when this graph was posted.

Thoughts on this? Combined with Krill's musing about bloodiest. game. ever. it may have something to it.

That's 5 swords. Swords are city takers - they really have no other purpose in this mod. Maybe they are just moving east. But I don't think so.

Dtay is a sharp guy, he wouldnt flash a stack of swords until it was klobbering time. This is probably a case of dtay hanging out a "dont tread on me" flag... But the way this game has been going, who knows!

I don't think he flashed it... more like AT stumbled upon it with his scout!

20% fortify on the top sword, so they've been hanging out for a little while.

Nice in-character war run down in Gavagar's thread.

So far it is opposed by three immortals.

Does anyone think Tasunke is going to over-react to this southern threat?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Only if Tsargon believes that's the kind of force Gavagai had available to conquer Grimace. I don't think we have had this information from Tsargon, but I can't imagine he doesn't have Gavagai's graphs to see what his power level actually is. If he has graphs it should be easy to figure out there's a lot of power missing. If he doesn't have Gavagai's graphs...well....popcorn

Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon

Man, this game is great! One of the most interesting we've had in years. Seems inevitable that it'll be up there with PB2 in the recommended new player reading list.

Hell yeah! It's been really fun to watch. Looking forward to TBS's T100 global report... mischief

Here's the world map with a rough sketch of current borders filled in. Spoiler-alert!

Remember that we have Toroidal wrap, so some players, e.g. REM, Gav, Krill, etc, are on both top/bottom or left/right of the map!
