People will continue to concentrate on defending themselves against their neighbors / staying in contention by eating their neighbors, rather than invest their resources in defending against a hypothetical threat from a naval power, even if the threat is genuine.

East Indiamen are intimidating, Mackoti is intimidating. While I hope you're right, some folks may go "President Madagascar" anf batten the hatches...

Totally agree with his partner:

Quote:And what if they did build more units and reinforced their coast? I'd say that the only time this would be bad is if we actually are going to come razing some important city a few turns later...
We don't mind 12-15 city empires far away from us. Eventually we'll out-tech them. They're more dangerous if they get to eat a neighbour in peace and suddenly become 20+ city empires.

Boldly: If I say they have the tech, it's pretty likely that they do. There is a slightly bigger chance that I missed some extra tech that they have but I was doing things like checking their lands for connected Calendar resources to confirm.

Dtay's got to be ready when AT slips up to stay in contention.

nice stats collection TBS.

imho dtay does not need to conquer anyone right now; he just needs to beeline Astro and then wait for the inevitable dogpile on AT (agree with Haram on this). getting 10 cities overseas and then 4-5 from AT would prepare him perfectly for a ren-era conquest.

Yeah but does dtay realize the bounty he could get by going for the islands now?

don't think so... the only player ive seen make any attempt of an estimate of how much land is still out there is Bacchus.

Commodore had a calculation too, but Krill and Mackoti simply know its "a lot" and thats good enough for tech planning. I liked the debate in MackTao's thread about going early for exploring caravels or getting optics at the last second and getting astro earlier. Taotao is definitely pulling his weight on that team, which is a credit to him.

Yeah, he would likely be a contender even without mack as a dedlurker. No way to know if he'd still be a favorite until he plays a solo game, but definitely a contender.

It is gratifying in postgame to read props in the lurker thread, but flattering to read them as reported realtime in opponent threads:

And true as well.
