I saw Elkad log in and end turn, so I hopped in to see what he did. His scout is now out of sight; my guess is that it moved southeast and we might see it again in a bit.
[spoilers] DTG thinks filthy casuals are ruining Realms Beyond

Okay, Cuzco becomes 'Skotison' next turn.
Today's exploration: To 1E of the Fish next turn? FYI, the first Lion was just sighted 4N of our cap.
Sounds reasonable! Man, 1S of the river corn is such a dumb city.
I'm developing a theory about the map: I think we're scattered across the map such that there are pairs starting close to each other, with lots of safe land in the other direction. The fact that we haven't seen anyone from our north/east, the way we should have if all the capitals were bunched at intervals as short as ours with Elkad's, is what's making me think this. So we don't actually want to rush him, if that's true; we want to establish a safe defensive line along our border and landgrab like lunatics into our safe space. If so, glory to Krill in the highest for not totally nerfing the quechua.
After Elkad played, I again hopped in to check. No sign of the scout, but I did notice while hovering over his name that he's spent only 2 EP against us, which implies that Elkad has met someone else, which implies that my previous map theory is nonsense. Maybe clusters of three, and the middle one gets something awesome to compensate for, well, being in a close-squeezed middle? If so, I'm not sure if that's good or bad for us.
I also renamed our capital while I was in. We should give ourselves a good thematic empire name/adjective to go with it. Silva Rhetoricae, after the website we're drawing from? Our capital is located in the middle of an isthmus, and the culture seals off the lush grassland area. If this area is genuinely sealed off then my great "loop the Scout around the Lake!" idea was... er... not so great. If there are ~222 land tiles per player, then there must be a large amount of free land anyway. It's possible that there are four groups of three capitals within close proximity to one another, and that each capital is set in the middle of an isthmus with a decent amount of backfill and a minimal amount of immediately contested space. Exploration: In two turns, we may need to start thinking about an optimal Quecha exploration path, if we're relying on this to scope out our south/south-west before building the first Settler.
Hmm ... it is starting to look like it won't loop around. Guess we will know more next turn.

Last night I dreamed that I logged into the game and started playing, and only when I went to hit End Turn did I remember that DTG was the turnplayer and not me, and so I then began composing a note to Sullla begging him to reload the game to before my login so that DTG wouldn't be mad at me and kick me off the team, and then I woke up. One of the things I did during this dream was try to decide whether our next research should be Pottery or Stranglethorn Tiger.
In other news, there's a peak peeking out in our scout's exploration to the south. So help me, if we stumble across some sort of cordoned-off rich area and we have to send the scout back... I guess I will try to look on the bright side and figure out how early we can reasonably settle the area by boat. Here's the latest view: I'll happily let the team decide on the next move: 1SW or 2S1E? The latter will reveal a lot of territory, and we can swing back round towards the west (the southern Lake is definitely a small Lake). The former will reveal less territory and eat a move in the Forest, *but* it is the more direct path around the Ocean-Lake towards the cap, and this move will entirely fogbust the coast. ---- We will have Eikad's graphs in ~3 turns, as he has put his EP on someone else. Given our proximity, this is pretty handy as it'd be nice to have forewarning of a Warrior rush. I'm quite busy at the moment, and will be for another week, so if you notice anything from the sandbox or interpreting demos, please let me know. FWIW, looking at "land area" on the demo page, I think 11 teams have more-or-less the same starting set-up, and the twelfth (Eikad) moved to a coastal spot.
I settled on Pottery; a 5/5 stealth for 5 is a solid play, but we needed an economic tech more. That said, I am really looking forward to our first Quechua coming out; I'd like it to get to the forest hill 3S2W of our capital and then maybe work an arc northish, so that it's in range to spot anything nasty coming from our west and get back to the capital while still fogbusting our first ring.
I think we should go SW with the Scout. Revealing more territory is good in the abstract, but in the concrete sense, we don't need to reveal this territory. It's dozens of tiles from our capital by land (or more realistically, several turns away by galley). If the land to the southwest gets us home, or bridges into Elkad's territory, I want to know about it. Re: busyness, let me know if you ever want me to pick up a turn. |
