So that's Mackoti of Cataphracts right nearby.

The Aztecs have just drawn the short straw, as explorers report the first contact with a foreign nation, that nation being ... Byzantium, Mackoti of Byzantium.

Literally four of the five non-Mack teams border Mack. The sixth one is hopefully at least accessible.

THIS IS PERFECTLY PREDICTABLE! THERE ARE ONLY TWO REASONABLE WAYS TO MAKE A CYLINDER MAP, THE 2 X 3 AND 1 X 6 - and you can't imagine 1 x 6 with a 37 x 57 overall map, can you?

They (and I) don't know the map setup though; you're looking at it from a different perspective. Using their last game, 33, as an example, they were only really close to 2 opponents, and 2 more were across water. An explorer showing up only a few turns into the game means whatever the setup is, 2-movers are potentially a threat.

No there literally only two ways to set up a six player cylindrical mp, 2*3 and 1*6 and with known map dimensions only one of those is possible. With no offset mack borders 3 players and accesses the other two, with an offset he borders 4 and accesses the fifth.

Also, I don't see the point of analysing demos at this point except to figure out probable city locations. Look at the map after 20 turns, not 7.

I don't think I was clear. If you don't know what the map looks like, you can't know what kind of access people have to you. To take this to an extreme to show what I'm saying, you may border 19 civs, but if there are mountain ranges in between you and all but 1, you border 1 civ.

If this was a stretched out wheel, you'd basically be "bordering" 2 civs, even though you'd technically border every civ.

So knowing very little about the map at this point, an explorer showing up at your borders a few turns into the game is indeed cause to raise your eyebrows. Although neither of the actual players on that team seemed all that concerned, it was the fake news report that was "over reacting".

Edit: In this game's terms, there is a particular isthmus that Alhazard mused about putting a barrier city on. If that's the only connection to his neighbor in that direction, that's a HUGE difference than a 10x10 grassland section that cataphracts can storm over. I and the players don't know what the map looks like, so it's worth thinking about who borders you and how.

It's especially silly for the Aztecs, as they will inevitably dominate the EP curve all game.

Well sure, but that makes their reaction even more weird. "Oh no, we border Mackoti of Cataphracts... via a shitload of jungle and hills that are very far from our capital! Also, he has no possible boat access to my core! This is one of the best possible situations I could have possibly hoped for on a 6 player map!"

What you wrote is similar to how Sulla reacted. lol

Also Scooter hammering home my point:

Quote:Of course, all neighbors aren't created equal. We had 4 of them in 33, but the access to each of them was definitely not equal. We'll have to wait until we get more map intel to figure out who is closest to us.
