The Bolt Caster can be upgraded? Is it a Proving Ground project?

Nope, just in the regular Build Items menu where the standard weapons are upgraded. All 3 can be upgraded, but might have additional tech requirements - e.g. I believe the Axes need to have had the Stun Lancer autopsied before the option shows up.

The Ruler Armours get upgraded in the same way after you get Powered Armour.

I can't say I've actually looked at the numbers lol particularly because I lost the Axe & Pistol in my Forge / Archon King near-squadwipe mission. I just paid for the 2nd upgrade to the Bolt Caster though, so I can compare to Plasma Rifles this evening.

Let's begin, Base management:

I got in and started the rumor for intel.




Gauss weapons came in.  I started Plated armor over Psionics. I checked the Black market and no discounts rushes for either so I figured we should go for the more straightforward improvement in plated armor. Also an Engineer finish clearing a room, I left him at that moment, but later put him to work, You'll see.

Intel Came in for 51.




Bought Mag Cannon.





I bought 92 supplies at the black market for 35 intel.





That's enough to buy Gauss Rifles.

Then I sold 77 corpses for 21 supplies





That's enough for the mag pistols





All weapons upgraded to mag level now.

Blacksite - Operation Brutal Rage


I take some time to figure out the team. I was on Discord talking with dreylin and DP so both are going on the mission. Also two specs in Jowy and Sareln, and WK as our Gren.






Time to start with some scouting and get on the building I think.




I see a turret




I'm going to try to go around and not use up my conceal, unfortunately I already put a couple guys on the roof.

Dreylin Gets vision on 2 pods from a roof.





Unfortunately I'm a bit spread out so I need to do some finagleing.
I'm sort of in position.




The pods advance and I have them surrounded. DP and Sareln are in front of the turrent and the pod of two but the other four are right there with the pod of 3.
I am slightly worried about the turrent behind me, but... gotta try.
Here we go. WK with the grenade.






Two down from the 3 pod with overwatch shots from Jowy and Dreylin. Lewwyn still stealth.

Then:










Sectoid down, but it took two overwatch shots. DP got the kill.


So now I have a turret, a trooper and a stun lancer left. Lewwyn still has to move. Going to take dmg on the interturn  for sure.

The biggest problem is Sareln is a bit exposed here:






I got him out too far and now the trooper and the turret will likely hit him this time.

Lewwyn takes out the Stun lancer:






Now we see.





Crit for only 4.

The turret missed!

4 dmg? OKAY!

DP takes out the trooper with lightening hands (3) and a shadowkeeper shot(3).  Now concealed again.




Lewwyn conceals and moves in. DP also starts to move in.

Lewwyn sees the 3rd pod from atop the train. I start moving the rest into ambush positions. Sareln heals and then next turn goes into overwatch with full cover out of sight.
Lewwyn gets sight and Dreylin takes a shot from far away.




Hit no kill.

Sareln get the kill on overwatch on sectoid.




It dies.

Now I have 2 more to get closer.

WK takes a coinflip shot:






Good! Trooper dead.

Jowy gives Sareln aid protocol, though Mech unit can't see him and he is behind full cover. We can see him via DP's concealed position. I just worry about the missile barrage if he gets close and gets sight.




Mech moves closer but doesn't fire. Time to die.

Sareln hits for 4 and:




Dreylin gets the kill. 3rd pod down.

Lew and Dp are still concealed! Scouting forward.

I move everyone up to the doors. Sareln and DP are over on the left, the rest on the right.

Lew opened the right door, no pods. Moves inside. Still no pods.

On the interturn, a pod moves into view on the second floor.






They are not triggered, Lewwyn still concealed. I'm going to wait a bit since I need to bring Dreylin up from the rear.

DP checks the roof for turrets.

Damn. A pod triggers inside the building due to Sareln outside the door on the left. Mech and 2 Troopers

 AND:




Look who is on the roof.

Okay... I'm going to set a couple guys on the ground to overwatch. Then Grenade from below, move Sareln away and see what happens.
Here we go:




UH!




Oops, they fell through the roof! And fell on top of Lewwyn for 3 dmg... 

But then Jowy's overwatch killed the mech right here directly after that last pic. So, two dead, sectiod left on 1 health. 

DP is still concealed.

I think my best option is to have Lewwyn kill the sectoid in cover and have sareln retreat and have the pod that's inside try to come out into overwatches.

Lewwyn runs past the sectoid out the door then blasts him. The pod inside doesn't have vision on any of these guys, its headed to the left.




Sareln get an overwatch hit, No one attacks.

Trooper is in the doorway.  WK hits that trooper and kills it on 32% odds yay, gets a promo.

Picked up some loot including an Elerium Core.

Sareln moves to cover again, hits the Mech, and its down to 1hp. No one else can get a shot. So Lewwyn throws a frost bomb on it.

Dreylin's Lightning Hands:






Nice kill in one shot with the new mag pistol.  Sareln finished off the mech. 5 pods down. That's all of them. DP has scouted the roof and there are no turrets.

Now its time to run into the objective.

So I start running everyone to the evac site. I wait to activate the objective.

Everyone is on the evac site.

PIck up the Vial. And reinforcements are ambushed.






I kill the last mech and then evac everyone.





Excellent




3 promotions, 2 injuries.  We also got 125 supplies!

I promoted DP to Quickdraw, OBvs

Left the other two.










What should we pick?

OH NO!






I am shaken... I guess that's what happens when the roof falls down on you!

I put our free engineer in the AWC. Lewwyn will be useable again in 9 days. Sareln in 3.

Let me know if any of the pictures don't come out.

Things to do:

1) Figure out the 2 promos.
2) Comms come in 2 days, so we need to make contacts.
