[SPOILER] PB37: Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the most aggressive of them all?

Mirrored starts work best if there is a low tech requirement. The best way to do that is to give double land food that require the same tech, and no other food. Because of the constraints of map balancing: ie not wanting players to move, you generally have to give the higher food value resources, so wet corn and wheat, pigs and cows. That way a player can pick any civ, and know that they have the ability to get all of the necessary tech before the first worker is built, then get whatever else they want to grab, religion, straight to pottery, AH for a possible chariot rush, or standard BW opening for slavery and chops.

This start somehow manages to give choices to the player that don't actually matter (you must get all food techs, unless you are IMP in which case earlier slavery to whip is about the same as improving the rice) that makes the first 50 turns of the game a micro efficiency challenge. I'm going to play this game out, but I do think that it's a shame that this is how the snakepick and starts have worked out.

Yup.  Didn't understand it at the time but now it makes sense.

Darrell

Ditto. Thanks for the explanation.

I'm wondering if Mardoc is finishing the map or we need a new map maker TBH.

It's out of my hands now  neenerneener. You've got to harass someone with server passwords instead. No idea how often Brick and Xenu check the site anymore, though.

Just checking, did you generate the map in rtr or did you make in in base BtS? If you made it in base BtS, did you increase the number of players in the world builder file up to 40?

I did this one.  And checked that it loaded in RtR afterwards.  Also checked: none of the selected civs had any starting tech changes from BtS in the changelog.
