Gav, JR4, and Couerva haven't signed up from PB37, but other than that who is missing? We will need sub players as well.

In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

I prefer snake in the abstract, but we might be past the point where it is practical.

Pretty sure this basically has to be New Year given how many people (incl. mapmakers) have that restriction

Well, to be honest there needs to be a solution to the tech cost issue, but if we simply allow every player to pick 2 extra start techs after seeing their start, snake pick is only impossible if we hit 35 players.
Even at 25 players, the last pick can choose from 10 different civs. Of course go much past that and either can go to something random, or run a second snake pick for picking an extra set of ub and uu. How much is the current civ balance dictated by start techs in your mind? India for instance seems potentially too good then, where they were moved to probably the worst start tech combo in RtR. Basically unconfident in general that the newer ideas will be balanced without carefully thinking through all the permutations. Seem like cool ideas to test - not sure giant game is the place to test them.

Hmmm truth be told it's hard to judge civ strength from start techs alone, that is to say, the worst civ with the right start techs is probably better than the best civ with the wrong start techs. Especially on a huge map. So if we did go with random civs, the that plus a random start means someone is going luck out. In that respect, it would likely be better for balance imo if players could at least pick the additional start techs.
Consider that both tow and RtR 3.x implemented tech cost scaling which lowered the cost of the six start techs significantly. |
