The game is very smart about internal routes from what I remember, always taking the highest value internal routes available. There is definitely some factor related to distance but I don't remember the details.

base_value = max(1.0, min(pop(To)/10, dist_factor(mapsize)*plotDistance(From, To))
Should give the base value of the trade route between two cities and in domestic trade routes it always chooses the best one.

Okay but what does the dist_factor function do? Does that formula mean that if a city is too close to the destination city, the population size never matters?

Yes, looks like if destination city is too close to the original city then it does not matter how big it is.

I feel like that was a bug that was never found, similar to the holy city formula resulting in the capital never having a chance to be selected. It would be much more natural for cities that are too close to each other to be discounted by a certain amount proportional to the distance, but with enough population that could be overcome.

Thanks Hitru, this is great. The important bit is: min( population / 10 , mapsize * plotDistance )
So the route is worth whichever is smaller of size or distance (with factors included). A big city nearby or a smaller than size 10 city far away will be comparable (if either is smaller than 1 the formula returns 1). So we need a big city as far from the rest of the cities (and overseas) as possible. So we'll keep growing Corvallis (currently size 9) and see when the mainland trade routes start to grow.

Turn 216
Sorry lurkers - we kicked the can down the road another turn, so the attack is now on t218. We did kill a couple of privateers for you though, in the hope that we'll create a bit of space for our strike force to squeeze through.
At present, between the Indian galleons that are heading back to shore and might unload into Evaporator and the privateers having their beady eyes peeled at sea the prospects for Operation Your MoM aren't looking too hot.
The delay is helpful up north, it means we can bring 7 galleons, 12 grenadiers and 9 knights to bear on the Heroic Epic/Forbidden Palace city. Which will be nice.
Demos and power.

Are you worried about the power disparity with Mjmd?

Our power relative to Mjmd has been the largely the same the entire time, what do you mean?

Just curious what your thoughts on it are. As you say, he's been ahead of you in power by a fair margin for a while, but the gap has been closing the last few turns.
