Hey it's Krill!
I can't speak for others, but pandemic stuff seems to have been good for RB time. Plus, following PB88, there's been more cross-pollination with Civforum. Ramk and a couple others from there have played in a couple recent Pitboss, and a few more are coming for this game.
There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.

We're all pretty standard 2021. Healthy, bored, and slightly more deranged than before.

I mean he has no reason to care as we have not met, but I'm also happy to see Krill back .
While we're at it, I have to point out that we still don't have a plan for how to get a map .
Also the one person that I tried to single out for the task has responded with deafining silence, which is of course respected.
I do hope though that enough non-players want to see this game happen and lurk it that maybe this can work as a joint effort.
My idea is to break down seperate tasks that different people could work on sequentially. Never having made a map I'm not at all qualified for this, but I will give it a try, with the hope that maybe somebody who knows better will correct me.
So, how do I imagine this can work:
- Find a map script and settings that produce a map that approaches the players' wishes regarding shape of the lands and size. I imagine that the mapmaking veterans will have suggestions.
- Roll a number of maps until something appealing comes up. I think it is understood that in a game this size, it can not be equally appealing to everybody. We (players) would need to agree if we allow one player islands. (I think with the vote tally it is a given that we want some form of multiple continents)
- Check maritime connectivity - either have all continents have coastal connection to others (not necessarily to all others), or leave them isolated before astro. Just don't have some isolated and some connected.
- Check starting positions relative to each other (only position, not quality), and move them if needed to avoid frustrating scenarios.
- Add land for starts which came out short.
- Design BFCs and immediate surroundings for each start.
- Add islands.
- Distribute strategic resources (per RB consensus I believe everybody is entitled to easy/equal access to all strategic resources up to oil/uranium/alu, but horse/copper/iron are the most essential obviously). Note for civforum players: It is highly unusual to have strategic resources, including copper, in your (assumed) capital BFC
- Distribute stone/marble
- Distribute luxuries
- Check all of that
As I said, vets please feel free to correct anything. I think 5 can be very work intensive and is optional. 7 is also optional / discretion of the mapmakers. We should be able to live with some imbalance regarding 9 and 10, but if course it would be nice if the mapmakers could take a look. 11 has always been a team effort.
I imagine that most tasks can also be split up between the different continents, if there is one person who gives out a gneeral guideline.
So my hope is to find lurkers who would be willing to take one or a few of these tasks upon themselves, so there is not one person getting overwhelmed. Now if there is somebody who feels like they would like to make this map on their own, please step ahead and we will shower you in praises (until the game starts that is, after that it's only complaints). If we find some volunteers to team up for this, it would probably good to set up a mapmaking spoiler thread already.
The good news remains: Still more than one month to go for the aimed for starting date

I haven't signed up and this is not a sign up, but I think I will either fall in as a dedlurker or globally lurk. The other thing I've been considering is making the map for you guys...
