I keep hearing commentators talking about second place, but I don't believe Carlsen for a second saying he won't defend. He's almost undeniably the greatest chess player ever and has history to cement. His choice opponent from last time of Firouzja is not going to win. I just don't see him not claiming the title anyway, no matter how little motivation he seemed to have immediately after a tournament.

I have to say I am quite impressed by Nakamura. I'll admit I am not a huge fan of his commentating style, but you have to respect his performance after basically being written off as a streamer who only plays blitz online.
The coolest thing to me is his post-game analysis on his channel. There are sometimes GMs who don't even show up for the press conference after a loss, because they are too frustrated. Yet Nakamura has no problem publishing a 20 minute analysis of a loss he suffered 1-2 hours earlier at this high level tournament.
I guess you can really see that his main source of income is streaming now, he gives the impression he is playing chess for fun.

+1 to this, but I’m biased because he’s my neighbor . He even posted after the loss to Ding Liren cost him second, which was in particular interesting if you watched it after Daniel King’s analysis.
I don’t think Carlsen will play with the existing format, and I don’t think FIDA will change the format to accommodate him.

Given how thoroughly you used to kill me, I don't think playing him would be a good use of time for either of us . I have had a few conversations with him, he's very approachable and friendly.

Oh come on, he is world number 8 in the live rating list, of course it's not going to be an even match. And doesn't he play against amateurs all the time? I think there is a video of him playing in a park in Madrid.
You could at least try to troll him: The next time tell him that you think the Queen is overrated and that the strongest piece is actually the horse, because it looks cool and you always use it to beat your grandpa.

How many compliments do I still owe you? 73? Do you want to spend one of them on this answer?
