I remember when I thought Republicans were the party of good governance. I didn't have really any hope going into the next two years on that front, but yaaaaaaa. There are too many fluff pieces out there, so someone tell me what the odds are of getting a moderate Republican elected as part of a compromise like Ohio did? Its also probably their best chance for 2024 is to not look like a dumpster fire for the next two years and its good for America.

Im hoping we have a different democrat for president. In a race between Biden and X, id go with almost any other X. Really need to get some age limit laws in place for all of government.

Pretty sure the moderate Republican is extinct. They've all been pressed out one way or the other.

Any Republican who works with Dems on something like "who runs the House of Representatives" will be seen as a traitor by the Republican Party and will be successfully primaried in 2024. Look at what happened to the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after Jan 6th - the two who survived 2022 were from Washington and California, both of which have a Top-Two primary system.

Even if they still control the speakership? I mean it would take some political maneuvering for sure, but if people get frustrated enough maybe? Its possible I'm just being foolishly optimistic. Maybe we have to pass through two years of dysfunction, Republicans suffer more defeats in 2024, and then maybe the purge of the extreme republicans can begin. Maybe that is the best outcome, but its going to suck for the next two years and I want it all. I want a functioning government and a reformed Republican party. I know, I'm an idiot.

Oh yes, even then. The battle is already begyn:

Note that MTG is on the less-insane side here, trying to whip votes for McCarthy. That's saying something about the sanity level of the rebels.

All of this sounds great for a functioning government. Yes please.

McCarthy's going to pull this off - they adjourned until 10PM Eastern (about 6 hours from this post) to get two of their members back, and then they need one crazy to vote for McCarthy and one to vote "Present", which they can probably pull off, and leave Boebert/Gaetz/Biggs and one other out in the cold.

The big fights are going to be the debt ceiling (yes, the federal government should pay the debts it's already accrued and committed to, this isn't hard people - messing with this is a terrible terrible terrible idea) and funding the government (a shutdown seems likely there, and we've had those before where they've been a predictable level of destructive/stupid).

Question about the effect of people voting present: how many rebels had to vote present for Jeffries to win?
