Civilization 5 Announced

Hm. I haven't been really involved with Civ in quite a while... not since vanilla Civ3. I finally got turned off by the amount of micro involved in a typical Civ game.

Every time a new version of Civ came out, or an expansion, I'd watch from the sidelines, hoping to see some improvement in that (for me) core issue. I was hoping that Civ 5 might scale down the micro enough to make the game worth picking up. From the sounds of it though... maybe better not, at least until its gotten a few patches under its belt.

Too bad. But at least Sword of the Stars 2 is due out next year. smile

If the game is any good.

So the rivers will look like rivers, and the roads will look like roads, and the bubbles will get out of the way, and the minimap will someday use more than 8 colors, and....
If that's the case, then Firaxis shouldn't have wasted so much money on their art team, and should have coded a working AI. All of a sudden, they had *way* more artists than any other area, which is how many of us figured out that Civ5 was in later stages of development.

Speaker Wrote:High level military tactics in Civ4 were about way more than making one big stack and "smashing" it against your opponent. See my Pitboss 2 thread for more info, but multiplayer at the highest level, where games are held with 1 or 2 city elimination (you lose 1 or 2 cities and you are eliminated) require a ton of tactical skill and unit flexibility.

Well, you were involved in the Civ4 beta testing just like I was. You know the people who were asked to continue to help out with Civ5. Way more fanboys than hardcore testers. I doubt the testing process of Civ5 was very rigorous at all. "These maritime city states are so cool! They are just like Sid's Sushi, but from the beginning of the game! Awesome!"

Because they didn't ask back the beta testers who actually pushed the limits of the game in Civ4.

There's this skill I lack, and I've been trying to improve it. It's called tact.

Yes, the beta testers generally suck, and yes the direction CiV took is retarded from every position except the one that T-hawk highlighted. And yes, most people suck at unit management in war.

And yes, when you reach this level, there just aren't that many people that have the ability to play the game that well, and communicate it. Truth be told, Firaxis really needed Aeson.

Aeson was amazing in Civ4 testing. I remember many games of him ruthlessly declaring war in 3000BC, burning down AI cities left and right, challenging the developers to come up with better AI coding. Ever wonder why warriors get that 25% city defense bonus in Civ4? Yeah. lol They sure could have used him for Civ5! Plus about three dozen of our regulars here...

I didn't recognize all of the names on the testing list, but the ones I did recognize were generally nice people who didn't like to rock the boat, and who would have been "happy to be there". In other words, exactly the wrong sort.

They should have gotten Krill, since he never agrees with anyone. [Image: wink.gif]

My guess is Sulla wasn't, since he started this thread with a surprised post that Civ V was so close to completion.

It surprising that is even possible considering how many people said it was fugly in the first place. Now though, you can turn it white but click on of the buttons at the top of the screen (the a/a with different backgrounds), and get rid of the background picture by changing one of the options in the settings (Settings>general settings on the right>forum skin, second from bottom).

And I'm still not sure which is worse, CFC or Poly. One has a bad forum, the other is full of idiots...
