Anyone else following Torchlight?

Seems like a good Diablo-type game (with Fate/HG:L/Mythos lineage). The single player version is coming out Tuesday (Oct 27), with free downloadable demo and $20 to unlock full game. Also has a lot of mod tools for those (unlike me) that like to mod.

I went to buy Borderlands yesterday but the stores were sold out. So I am taking a wait and see WarBlade's review approach. I guess I have time to give the Torchlight demo a spin.

Hehe, I was checking out vids on youtube and thought hmm, Runic, where have I seen that name before? The game play vids looked familiar, like Mytho... then the realization...

I just went thru the FAQ and could not spare some amusement. A lot of the features read like Runic Games nabbed them from the D2 1.13 patch wishlist. Shared stash, merc stash, infinite dungeon .. and Torchlight already beat D3 in one point: it has weapon switch lol

Since the original Diablo team is behind Torchlight we pretty much know what to expect. Screenshots look nice, maybe a bit simple for today's gfx blockbusters but that's it like when there is only a small dev team.

Yet the game lacks multiplayer but that's seems to be in the making.

Straight delivery via Steam at only 16 € .. can't say no it thumbsup

Gotta love shared stashes! Fast'n'easy way to get stuff from your melee char to your ranged char and vice versa.

Do tell about the merc stash? huh

Merc stash is where you stack mercs one on top of another. or side by side like sardines smoke

Still waiting for the demo @ the official site

Yep shared stash is nice! Way easier to transfer items between chars then with Diablo:Hellfire Cornerstone of the World wink

Merc stash: sorry i said that wrong. Now i know better.

Each char has a pet being either a cat or a dog. I refered to the pet's inventory which is as large as your own inventory. He's also a nice little cash-in help: put all the stuff you want sold into your pet's inv and send it to town. After a while your pet returns with the cash while you stay down in the dungeon for more adventuring or a little fishing trip if you like. You can also equip your pet with 2 rings, an amulet and (drumroll) 2 skills it uses automatically! If you ever wanted to see a cat cast a fireball into critters faces that's your chance wink

Why wait? I can't say that my bucks were wasted. I definatly like it smile

The interface is very much like the belt interface Blizzard plans for D3 with 10 hotkeys you can assign anything to for straight execution. LMB is walk and normal attack while RMB can have 2 skills you switch over with TAB.

All i miss yet are reconfigureable controlls and hotkeys.

Yes, I'd definitely recommend Torchlight a lot too -- for 20 bucks you can't go wrong, even with no multiplayer

Part of the reason is KoP needs moderation, however, as a person lacking restraint with his gaming time would run and grab the game anyways.

I know I am not being fair to TorchLight base on the experience I had with Mythos but that's why I would like to try the demo first and hear what you guys have to say. Not that Mythos was a bad game, especially when it was only early beta. I have no real complains about the game except, I didn't get the feel.

I am not talking about the story (For me, a good game can do without a story. Game stories are only cute on the first go around) or atmosphere. I am talking about the satisfying sound when you slice up a weaver in Diablo, so much so that you can feel the muuuush. The clank on your shield vs a bunch of knights that make you think about repair bills, and the stunlock, knockback effects that feel physically real. You know, that desperate feeling when your all powerful ironman mage is being snared by a whimpy illusion weaver? You know, you find yourself leaning forward, pushing on the keyboard with your body weigh and clicking your mouse like mad, all the while well aware that none of these helps but you just can't help it.

D2 has lost much of that feel but it's still there, such as when fighting Baal with a not so uber toon and keep getting pushed back by his cold waves; and then a vine pops up to nip at your heel at the most inopportune time.

Guild Wars has a small dose of that feel, mainly when you are trying to run away from that meteor shower, but you are crippled.

So far, Borderland gives me that feel when I am dying fighting for a second-chance. And this morning I find myself putting my whole body into it when I was trying to force myself up a roof top. I had to laugh. (Yup, you can grab those treasures on the platform across Dr Zed's shop. Not that it's really worth the trouble, but it had to be done ;p)

So, how does TorchLight feel?

TBH sounds from your comments that you should stick with Borderlands (at least for now). I'd say that Torchlght does feel fairly similar to Mythos, but with a bit more of Diablo I in it. On the other hand, I found a couple of the Borderlands missions in the starting areas (as afar as I got so far) on normal difficulty (I guess there's only one difficulty lvl?) more challenging than anything so far in Torchlight on the "very hard" setting.

There are two. Once you complete the Borderlands campaign you can proceed through a second play through where the usual buffed up adversaries are in abundance and "Badasses" become "BadMuthas".
