Adv48: Ruff's Gold

Write up is here. That was a fun game - thx T-Hawk. I decided not to max out on food, rather valued production more. I am considering replaying the game aiming at restricting their tech instead of rushing to space.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Thanks smile Your writeup clearly shows me that I should have used more goldmines. It never ocurred to me to put them on a gl-tile. I don't know why as I did put Iron and Incense on that duh

I went mega food and did not find production to be an issue. Food converts to production in many ways: whip, specialists (including Angkor Wat priests), and in spawning and settling more super specialists.

Quote:I decided to do something different ... I wanted a city with lots of commerce and lots of production. As such, my default tile would be ... grassland forested hill with river gold (8 commerce, 2 hammers, 1 food after mine)

Why a hill? Flatland grass river gold is 8C, 2F, 1H, so doesn't need other food tiles to support. You actually don't gain by having the mine on the hill - mined gold is only +1H either on a hill or not.

Quote:grassland irrigated corn or wheat gives you 6 food (my testing only showed 5 food for this as the tiles were not irrigated)

They are irrigated. Were you looking at tiles not within a city border? Tiles outside a city border don't receive irrigation, for some strange reason. Corn or wheat strictly beat pigs here, since the farms get an extra food to 7 total at Biology.

Still, 1645 AD is a pretty fast launch, so maybe you did have the right idea all along...!

Apparently you played fast enough to not even notice the identity of your neighbor smile

The hill makes the tile 2/1/8 instead of 1/2/8; you get an extra hammer from the hill not from the mine. All you need is one corn tile to feed four gold/hill tiles. Compared with five gold/flat tiles, you gain three hammers at the cost of seven commerce. It is not clear to me which is better, but it is clear 1645 AD whups ass smile.

I wanted production early without having to whip or wait for other ways of converting food.

yeah, but not in my testing ... as I farmed the land but not with it next to a river. I forgot to WB in an appropriate river in my test.

Frequent readers of my reports will know that I always (and I mean always) report Isabella as Lizzie. I have no idea why.

Wow, the ability to get the space race tech that early is impressive. I felt like I was limping to the end with a similar resource setup (iron, gems, and silver instead of three gold), though I suspect that many more turns of build research might be the key compounding difference.

Amazingly fast! Looks like hoarding gold with the Bureaucracy bonus was the way forward. Well played.

Hey, you launched fast, but did you count your score for the tech lead? (Is there more than 1 page to the report that I'm not seeing?)

I didn't bother to add my score up. Is there an easy way to tell what the AIs are missing?

Isabella - wanted Biology, Electricity, Railroad and Artillery
Zury - Fascism, Biology, Electricity, Railroad and Artillery
Han - Biology, Electricity, Flight and Artillery
Cyrus - Divine Right, Chem, Electricity
Shaka - Communism, Biology, Electricity, Railroad and Artillery

So, by my count, I had ...
  • Biology in the column headed by Assembly Line
  • Flight, Artillery, Electricity and Medicine in the column headed by Flight
  • 17 other techs
... for a score of 22 - 10 (gold outside of BFC - didn't mine it) or 12.
