That's the question on everybody's minds.

This was a really interesting game and an interesting map, it's a shame that those of you playing let it die from inactivity. To me, it demonstrates the key problem with the PBEM format: the game proceeds so slowly that everyone starts to lose interest. We often complain about the (very real) issues with Pitboss, but in this regard the format is far superior.

Also, I didn't think darrell's play made any sense in this game. Well played Krill, for getting the only player who could threaten your home cities to agree midgame that he would never do that. I can't say much more than that, as everyone other than Krill stopped updating their threads about six months ago...

He saved my bacon against Yaz, and some things are more important than winning. You could argue that's a stupid way of looking at things in a competitive environment like RB, but there it is.

Actually, it took pretty much everyone (but Dreylin) to save my bacon against Yaz lol.

That claim and justification isn't true. We had 8 weeks off over July to September due to vacations and both before and after that have had various work trips. RL always comes first, and this issue happen with pitboss games as well because it isn't an issue with the game type but the players.

Here is "Darell's Timeline"

1. I come up and execute on a brilliant plan to land tGL and Monotheism, getting +50% infrastructure production on a whip map.

2. I invite Yaz to raze my capital.

3. I, er, divine his attack and do a real bad job stopping it.

4. I eventually get everyone to give me a strategic resource and barely repel his attack.

5. I then try to help Ruff against Yaz. Much comedy ensues. Eventually we succeed.

6. During 2-5, Krill builds every wonder in the game and grows his cities like crazy.

7. I agree to race Krill, me for culture (then later space) while he goes for domination.

8. We come up with a brilliant plan to sling Steel. I broker it to Dreylin to buy more time to win space.

9. Krill is angry, then gets more angry when he thinks I stole some island from him. Which I didn't damn it. I realize he is going to attack me. My balls crawl up into my gut. I then placate him (or so I thought) by gifting the cities on the island.

10. Thinking we are still working together, and wanting to avoid a PB2 style debacle (okay okay, being lazy), I gift Krill my army. Comedy ensues.

11. Krill decides that he will attack Dreylin as the path of least resistance.

12. It takes about 4 more months of painfully slow play for everyone to realize the game is over, and I get to type this post.

Below is the relevant agreement, with the important clause bolded in red.

Quote:Okay, so like I said I started planning out my cultural victory path and after almost falling asleep 2-3 times realized it was going to take make the game boring. OTOH, I do enjoy space. I recognize on this map space (esp. at Quick) that space will take longer than culture, but I'd still like to go there. So, here is what I'm thinking:

Krill Gets
1. I go for space and not culture.

2. I join in on the attack against Dreylin (thinking of contributing somewhere around 25% of the total force).

3. I agree not to settle any new island cities (so basically 11+3+3 = 17/18 total).

4. I will provide you Oil and Coal if you lack it (and I have spares).

Darrell Gets
1. I get to join in on the attack against Dreylin (really want some war action to spice things up).

2. I get the first three cities on the Gold island to my north, in addition to three cities in Dreylin's land. The three cities in Dreylin's land can be small islands so as not to claim too many tiles, but need to be viable (at least one seafood).

3. You agree to help me continue teching even after you have the military techs you need to win the game. I don't see the need for a hard rule here, I'll trust you to give valid effort here.

4. You agree to attack SL and Ruff only after Dreylin is totally dead (they've been my friends).

We Get

1. In addition to sharing Sid's, we agree to share Mining, Inc. This one is pretty big for you IMO because I'm pretty sure I can get it and it will help you over a longer part of the game than me.

Wasn't that if you went for a space victory? And I decided to not take that deal so I'd keep the island?

If you are referring the first angry part, that was over sending Steel to Dreylin. The important lesson is never underestimate Krill's reaction to bad news. For example (and just maybe I deserved it) his initial reacion when Ruff dropped some spies off was essenitally homicidal.
