You will be missed, Pete

Hi,

as I have just read here, --Pete has passed away. He had been a regular poster here at Realms Beyond, so long-time RBers might remember him. He was really a unique person, and I already miss him greatly. frown

The rest is copy-and-paste from my post at the Lurker Lounge, in remembrance of Pete.

I first "met" Pete in the old DSF forums and had the pleasure to read many of his "retroactive birth control" posts. While I was glad not to be on the receiving end, I felt that if I ever would be, I would have deserved it - he never extended his wrath unjustly.

Later we met again at Realms Beyond, and only then did I dare to argue with him in the off-topic forum. I got lucky; I only received some mild instances of his wrath. And as I had predicted, I deserved that - and learned a lot in the process.

Pete was one of the primary reasons I returned to RB and the LL even after I stopped playing Diablo. His posts were *always* worth reading - insightful, witty and enlightening. It doesn't happen often that people change a longe-time opinion they have about something after arguing with others. Pete actually managed to achieve this truly rare feat with me, twice.

His way to see behind things and to argue in a crystal-clear, concise way has influenced me greatly, more than any other person on the net and more than most people in real life. Something of him will continue to live inside me, as I often "hear" him in my head when I think about something or am in a discussion with others.

I regret that I never had the chance to play any online games with him. I recommend ShadowHM's interview with Pete on RB here to get some insights into how games have influenced him.

This is a sad day.

His appearances on the RB boards have been limited for a long time, but I do fondly remember the old grump.

Yeah, he'll be missed.

I am very very sad. Pete, I will have more words for you when I am not shedding tears.

I have always felt losing out when I had the chance to make (came so close but missed it) the Vegas meet he and his Mrs organized. Gris was there too.

I hope Gris doesn't mind me re-posting this photo from the meet. There's Pete and Gris.

May you rest in peace, Pete!

I didn't know Pete, but anyone who played a part in creating this wonderful community is ok in my book. RIP.

Thanks for posting that, KoP.

I, too, really wish I had been able to get to that meeting. I had been hoping there would be another one, so that I could meet Pete and Magi in person. (And some others who also attended that one.)

What I posted on the Lounge. cry
=======================
I was going to call Pete last week, but then I had to work all weekend on an issue. Figured I'd call him this week. Hadn't talked to him in a few months, figured I'd check on him.

I suppose there is a special corner of Hell for procrastinators, and I'll get to visit it for a while.

Then I got Sabra's PM just now, telling me that I can only call Magi now. I will.

Thanks, Sabra, for waking me up. Sadly, it's to a much poorer world than the one I went to sleep to.

I offer this poem, a slight mod of a poem used to honor fallen brothers in arms:

He shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary him, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember Pete.

Pete is my favorite Viet Nam vet, and my favorite Rocket Scientist, all wrapped into one humorous, curmudgeonly package. He's also my favorite in a lot of other areas.

I count my self lucky to have met him, and Magi, in person in Vegas shortly after I came home from a war. I've talked to him on the phone now and again since then, and will be kicking myself for not doing so more often.

Magi told me the last time we talked that Pete enjoyed my calls.

How niggardly of me not to offer a few more small slices of my time. All it takes anymore is to push a speed dial button and hope to hear the voice on the other end.

*sigh*

EDIT: Just got off the phone with Magi. Great to hear her voice, no matter the occasion. One of this world's great people.

While i was checking some D3 news i discovered a post stating Pete had passed away and it really struck me like hitting a wall. I've never had meet him in person, just rarely on Woody's old Naked Beach Forum, so i can't say i've known him well. Yet one of his works - The Immortal Hero - left an impression on me and in fact on pretty much any Diablo player because it's essence found it's way into Diablo II and was given the name "Hardcore".

Thus it did seem appropriate to me that one of his "childs" should say a last farewell. After i located my Immortal Hero from adventures 13 years past i put together a Win98 box to get D1 v1.07 running with the original PC name these adventures were done on and brought Elric`[ImH] back to Sanctuary so he could bow to his father.
