A rough idea for an observer mode in Civ:
Add a mod to Civ that outputs the map state to an open format (xml, json) on disk.
Add a web viewer that displays the information on the web.
Worth doing?
I have to run.

I was thinking the other day... a pitboss could have a separate "lurker" player that is isolated, but has the full map and full EP visibility on all players. No modding needed. The only drawback that I can think of is that at least one lurker would have to log in every turn to end turn.
If you know what I mean.

Hm. Another drawback is that only one lurker can lurk at a time. And of course, it's less accessible than a web interface.

Couldn't you make the "lurker" player end turn instantly?
I don't think one at a time is too bad, tho a viewer would obviously be better.

Save each turn and let the viewer advance/back up through the turns as well and you're golden.

How about players can also "time travel" but can't move anything. (This makes it more equal to a pbem as you can catch up on demos/graphs like you can by opening old saves).
I think this is turning into a Christmas list for pitboss

That would have to be a separate mode for only a certain player's information, maybe password protected for each player.
