Does anyone remember Wing Commander? You know, Kilrathi, Maniac, etc?

Its creator, Chris Roberts, has started on a new project, called Star Citizen, which will apparently be an open world space flight simulator, with a single player option.

Star Citizen is crowd funded, at 9.5 mio dollars already.

I thought we had talked about this here already but apparently not (I do think it was mentioned in the Torment thread). I have a "wait and see" attitude on this one - I thought their crowdfunding tiers were highly suspect because you were basically paying for in-game ships and money with real money. Not a fan of that. I don't mind you selling vanity stuff for real money, but stuff with real in-game value (that changes the relative power levels between players, not just for convenience) should not be purchasable.

The physics portion of their demo is fucking amazing though. But it could be faked, of course.

I went for an Aurora LX during the promotion when they brought lifetime insurance back... I don't want to buy a ship with real money that I don't know I'll keep getting back without a maintenance fee, tbh.

I have a suspicion that the economy is going to be a lot more synthetic than the one in, say, EVE Online... and that that's probably going to cause problems for people with a certain set of sensibilities. I have some thoughts on buying ships for cash, but they basically boil down to "as long as you can't just print money directly I'm not enormously concerned for the state of the economy."
