[SPOILERS] AlaePB1 - Zanth's reporting thread

Hi all! dancing
You may call me Zanth and I'd want to post reports about our PitBoss game.

Some general info:
1) English isn't my native language, so feel free to correct me (I hope after a few posts my language would be more understandable for native-speakers)
2) game is connected to CivStats, here's the link http://www.civstats.com/viewgame.php?gameid=2634
3) If you know Russian, you may visit http://fosgenij.tumblr.com/ where I've already posted some reports.
4) I'm playing Cyrus and gonna wipe out all other civs w/ my immortal army pimp
5) It's the game w/ the map generated here http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthread.php?tid=6467

Firstly I'd want to discuss picking leader's aspect:
at my turn already were taken Willem van Oranje, Alexander, Pacal II, so the choice is between
Cyrus
Gandhi
Genghis Khan
Gilgamesh
Hatshepsut
Qin Shi Huang
and 4 players to go: myself, Humanophage, Bacchus and Gavagai. (You may know them it seems they are rather active users of RB).

We had on opportunity to see starting places and then to choose, but if there was no such opportunity which one would you choose? I had a hard decision between Cyrus and Gandhi (a bit later I would show the picture of my start, and the choice was even harder), while having zero experience at PB religion race, I chose Cyrus as a slighter simple candidate.

Were you given a list of leaders you had to chose from, or could you pick any leader?

What's the difficulty?

It's a nice way to balance the game a bit, but still leaves the last picker some flexibility. I'm not sure whether we will pick before or after seeing the start, will consult the gang and post here, then we can see whether we should run seafood-only starts and generally a greater variety of them.

Why did you choose Cyrus? So you didn't start with myst?

What do you mean by the "religion race?"
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

I understand you only made this thread a few hours ago, but pictures will be a good idea, especially since I don't think many people are going to both read this and visit a Russian-language blog to stay informed with your game.

The difficulty level is monarch.

As I said, main choice was between Cyrus and Gandhi. My thoughts were: Pacal II is present. He's a strong Fin leader w/ myst. I presume he would invent religion firstly. Due to his Fin trait he would often overcome me in this "religion race" if we would choose the same tech ~50%. Moreover, I have little PitBoss experience; though I played w/ AI often, so I presumed that I would perform far less mistakes at start if I won't choose such religion races (it seems there should be an idiom for this, but I don't know how it's called).

I had another reason to choose Cyrus: the chosen group of available leaders have too many early UU, so there's high probability ofn early wars, and it's better to have immortals in my army.

What do you think about my thoughts? Were they correct?

My start is shown below (though I've already moved warrior 1N)

General thoughts:
lots of food
low amount of forests
low prod
AH is priority

Both Cyrus and Gandhi recieved some pros:
Cyrus's: Cha trait would be helpful due to plenty of food, there would be lots of slaving. AH as a priority, and we know both prerequisites.
Ganghi's: location is wonderful for Great People economy (or how it's called?) and he has Phy trait.

So, if you chose Gandhi, what were your first steps?

P.S. At the moment of decision I wasn't aware about sugar to the north.
