Xmas Past - the art of thread necromancy

Was searching for some Diablo screenies for the wiki since it seems I didn't get all the files transferred from my old comp to the new.

Weird that Cy's screens would be broken links, he's with the same isp forever!

Clicky for some interesting screens [Image: smile.gif]

  Adventure Thirty-One: Results
Posted by: Sullla - August 23rd, 2008, 10:58 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (4)

As usual:

http://www.garath.net/Sullla/adv31results.html

All sorts of interesting stuff here. Ruff was the fastest by a good margin, but the BUG mod turned his game into a shadow, so the fellow with the unpronounceable name is our official winner! thumbsup I also find it extremely amusing that T-Hawk and timmy827 turned in the fastest victory dates by far, yet were among the slowest players for this variant. Bit of a change from our usual scenarios, eh? lol

No real Comments from the Sponsor here, as I rolled an ordinary map without doing any customizing. I did pick the Byzantines for two reasons:

1) They were Spiritual.
2) We hadn't used them before in any other games.

The "No City Razing" was turned on as a hint from me to players that the fastest games would be achieved by peaceful means. It's just impossible to raze your way across the landscape faster than someone can click their way into a Cultural victory. Then again, maybe I should have left it off and let someone try it... Ah well, perhaps the next time we try this? smile

  The Variant Revolver
Posted by: Lurker Wyrm - August 23rd, 2008, 03:41 - Forum: Variants - Replies (9)

Had an idea I thought I'd throw out to see if it garners any interest. We seem to have issues with people committing to a long-term weekly variant, so why not try something a bit more simple? We can get a group of people together, either ad-hoc or pre-plan a few days/week in advance and have a throw of the dice (literal or otherwise) to pick a variant and chunk of the game to get through. It doesn't have to be a dungeon or a hard mode mission or anything, heck it could wind up being Charr-barrs (I know Hawk wrote it up as Charrmen of the Board, I just thought I'd share that one with you guys) through Istan missions or nudist rules through Echovald Forest. Basically something that won't need too much pre-planning work and won't require a long term investment.

  FFH Event
Posted by: darrelljs - August 20th, 2008, 08:34 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (4)

I had a pretty decent idea for an event, the problem is it is based around FFH. I know several RBers play FFH extensively, but I'm not sure there is enough critical mass to support an event. I'm also wondering if it would be okay to use the RB forums to post the event info and reports (I'm guessing it wouldn't be an "official" epic or adventure).

So, if you are interested in something like this, please reply to this thread, and if you have any ideas on the best way to host it, please offer them in this thread smile.

Thanks,
Darrell

  Adventure 31 T-hawk summary
Posted by: T-hawk - August 19th, 2008, 17:05 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (3)

Having trouble finding the motivation to write up a full report, since I finish pretty thoroughly last anyway, and the report for Friendly Takeover is much more interesting.

Culture Victory (surprise!) in 1680 AD. 6 hours 57 minutes played.

I shared Isabella's Buddhism, getting her to Friendly quickly. I got the AP bonuses for free too when she built it. De Gaulle attacked me once with knights and maces, which consumed an hour to fend off with pikes and muskets. I slinged Liberalism to Nationalism, needed to pick up Gunpowder against France, then stopped research.

I got very lucky with Great Artist spawns from a mixed pool in the capital (with Great Library), spawning eleven total. All three cities also got several early wonders thanks to all the resource doublers. Also I focused on the religious buildings early to get the 1000-year doubling of the Sistine bonus. The game was quite satisfying as a speedy game-time cultural win, but I'm completely incapable of playing Civ at any real-time speed other than maximum relaxation. smile

I'm still behind on posting a complete report on Colonization. Apologies. So, a short report here:

Result: Cultural victory in 1882, turn 211. The game took 2 hours, 7 minutes.

  Adventure 31 - Kylearan's failure
Posted by: Kylearan - August 19th, 2008, 02:58 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (2)

Hi,

I liked the concept of this adventure, and having won the same event for Civ 3 way back when, I decided to participate in this as well. I don't have time for longer games anyway at the moment, which is rather unfortunate. frown

I figured that most people would go for a cultural victory, as it's the safest way to win under time-constraints. So I tried to go for the UN victory instead, first because I haven't gone this route in ages, and second because I'd like to compare results with different gameplans. It's a more risky approach, but might need less micromanagement (and thus, time) to win - you don't need to juggle around with great artists for example, and have to think less which tech to research as wonders or special buildings or not really needed until the UN.

Well, it turned out the risk was too high - I didn't win, at least not during the first two elections (after which I abandoned the game). My opponent in the elections was Gilgamesh, who had a defensive pact with Saladin (and who voted for him). And while the rest had voted for me before, they abstained in the final election. Adopting Police State, Nationhood and Theocracy (their favorite civics) didn't help either, so I called the game lost.

The only leader I was friendly with was Gilgamesh rolleye , the rest were at pleased - but it looks like I had accumulated too many "traded with worst enemy" and "didn't declare war" mali along the way. On the other hand, I had really bad luck with demands - only once did an AI demand a tech from me (I had a tech lead all game long), and never once that I adopt a religion or civic, not even Isabella! Argh. rant I had counted on that for additional diplo boni, but no luck this time.

I stopped playing after 1h09m, with a weird city placement, automated workers (after having improved the capital manually) and lots of other smoke. The game went surprisingly well nonetheless.

  Adv 31 quick report
Posted by: athlete4life10 - August 18th, 2008, 16:22 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - No Replies

I really loved the idea and the setup of this adventure even if I did fail miserably at it. My pregame thoughts were to try to get a religion out of the gate seeing as we started with mysticism and translate that into an eventual cultural victory. I tend to suck at warfare and generally play a peaceful builder styel of game.

Well when I lost the race for hinduism early on I decided right then and there I'd switch modes and go for either a conquest or domination victory. Well if you read the first paragraph you already know I have know idea what I'm doing when it comes to war huh so this was already a bad idea. I raced out to get a pretty early tech lead and I built some wonders such as stonehenge, the parthenon, SoZ, Mausoleum, TGL and remained the general tech leader all game. I was the first to Music and would easily have been the first to liberalism if I had continued. However 2 very failed attempts at war with DeGaulle got me discouraged and while there was enough time left in the game for me to patch it up and go for a cultural victory there wasn't enough real life time to do so. So at 770AD I retire dissatisfied with my performance yet again and eagerly await the next epic. I failed to see where you capture the real life time info when I was going through the end game screens but by my rough estimates it was about 5-6 hours (I know pathetic). I just love to pretend I know how to Micromanage 8) .

Thanks for putting this one together and I plan on attempting a shadow game of this one when I have time!

  Adv 31 - zeka's quick report
Posted by: zeka - August 18th, 2008, 15:22 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (1)

This one is not the type of game I like to play, I like civ because it’s a turn-based game and you have time to spend thinking about strategy, micromanagement and other things. Although, since it would be a fast game, I would like to see the worker automation.
It seemed that the “hurry spirit” took me even before the game started: I haven’t planned well the strategy… the first thing that went into my mind I did. The plan was to win with AP diplomacy since it has the fastest victory date. Yes it is, but not the fastest victory in time spent! All those missionaries asking for a destiny took me quite a good time. The lack of time to think made me beat my record of weed moves as well! smoke

THE GAME

Settled in place, first build is warrior since I’m going for Hinduism. Few turns later Hinduism is founded on a distant land 1 turn after Buddhism.

Well, let’s go for Judaism so. The founder of Buddhism was actually Isabella, who is my neighbor! The new plan was then to adopt Buddhism as fast as possible, although expand Judaism.
My scouting warrior dead to hostile villagers as well as the one built in Constantinople. frown Judaism is founded there in 2740BC.

Thessalonica is settled western near stones, cows and corn. Adrianople comes later on eastern coast getting pigs and floodplains.
Stonehenge and Oracle (Theology) were built in Constantinople, and the first Great Prophet founded Confucianism.

After some empire expanding, Thessalonica completed Pyramids(don’t ask me for what) and the capital starts working on Apostolic Palace, built after 480 years.

Another Great Prophet is born and it builds The Temple of Solomon. I lost Taoism for 3 turns.

At AD times the religion situation of the world got shape: only 2 Jewish (Lincoln and De Gaulle), 3 Hindus (Saladin, Chinese and Gilgamesh) and 2 Buddhist (Isabella and me). It appeared the AP victory would not come, but I continued to send missionaries away. Actually at this time I was more worried about finishing useless World Wonders (such as Chichen Itza!), with stone and marble in hands, and passing the turn fast than building missionaries. smoke
Turns passed and it became obvious that AP victory would be impossible still more that some civs were at Theocracy civic. So I chased the obvious victory: UN diplomacy! Wright? nod WRONG! rant What kind of weed I was smoking??? smoke Culture is the fastest victory (time played), culture victory = backspace after liberalism (or even earlier after music and drama). I completed UN in 1665AD. For my luck, the path for Mass Media gave me some +50% culture buildings and I was able to win in 1854AD with 2h38min spent!

I took an interesting screenshot after a weird event: I bribed Saladin for making peace with De Gaulle trying to avoid negative relations with both, he accepted and made peace with the French. Just after that he declared war again!

Well done Saladin you got a free tech… but I thought he would be at peace for at least 10 turns. Or not? rolleye
So that was my weed game. Thanks for the sponsor. thumbsup

  Adv31: ZPVCSPLFUIFDPEF's game
Posted by: ZPVCSPLFUIFDPEF - August 18th, 2008, 12:22 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (1)

Just a quick summary before I post a full(er) report with screenshots tomorrow.

Settled on the northernmost Ivory for the extra hammer, and went for Buddhism. Missed it.
Built 3 more cities in high food locations.
Wonder spammed in Capital, built my 3 cathedrals there.
Turned off tech at Music + Civil Service

Ran lots and lots of artists in my other 3 cities, two of which I bombed up to Legendary.

Culture win 1840 AD. 1 hour 1 minute.

I din't automate anything, just used this new "Fortify" command on my Workers.

edit: I wonder if anyone tried to do a quick AP Diplo victory.
