So what do I win?
Also, a strategy game where there is only one viable strategy is not much of a game. I did try to warn you of that point with the way I wrote the introduction (Thanks for that by the way, I really appreciated the opportunity. I enjoyed everything you wrote).
Out of interest, if a random map is out, what sort of map do you think would have been better?

Do you think just starting on the outside have been better than on the inside?

I actually think a LOT of what was said in those roasts aged well, including yours of course. But see, now I'm wondering if you had seen the map already when you wrote it ![lol lol](https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif) . They were fun all-around.
I think this exact map shape could have worked great with some changes. Imagine for example this same map with the barb cities removed, the capitals relocated to the outer edge, and maybe you throw some Astro islands out there in the fog and tone down the inner sea. I think that would have totally worked. Placing us all on the inner ring sped the game up tremendously. I think when designing for Medieval, you have to consider that players can build Galleys and 2-movers on T0, so the world is "smaller." As a result, you have to make it "bigger" to make it feel the same size. Bigger doesn't have to actually mean bigger, but Commodore settled a single city and its second ring was immediately bordering the Must Capture juiced barb city between us.
Basically I think the map idea was pretty good, and it just needed to be refined.

Amazing cross-post. So TL;DR: yes. I think that single change alone would have fixed like 75% of it.

That's basically the PB2 map you are describing.
I think I did know the map design but I purposely stayed out of it except the raise the issues of horse visibility on T0. If anything I was advocating for a slower map, but frankly the later the era start, the faster the game goes: Everything slants further and further towards rushing.
FWIW I'd have written the same blurb regardless of the map design simply because of that point.
Anyway, if you ever change your mind and want to play a late era start on a random map then I imagine you'd get a decent group together for it: turn pace alone sweetens most distatseful game options and map design.

Pretty much. But I do think it would be a good map design for this. Hardly the only setup of course, but a very valid one I mean.

I would definitely accept a random or mostly random map in exchange for the elite turn pace of this group + late era start. No question. Again, these games are decided by neighbor luck way more than map balance anyway.

For context, I played my first turn of this game almost exactly 2 months ago. The fastest game I've ever seen. To be fair, this is truly an all-star PYFT cast here.
