How long is the ETA for MoM? I said turn 70 or earlier is fine. More than that is going to be risky.

Miguelito got Hinduism, so ALhazard is the only one that doesn't have a source to pop border pushing him with culture seems reasonable.

The way Miguelito has prioritized the stone make it look like he is going for the Mids.

See, this reporting thing, it comes and goes in spurts, for whatever reason.

So there's the edge of Mardoc's borders:

So, here's my question: since this is a border zone, should I be settling adjacent to my non-shared food source for the new city so he can't settle up on it? I.e., should I settle on the Y instead of the X? The downside is building the road connection to the new city will take time, time during which all my cities could have benefitted from the additional happiness the silver provides and the new city could have offset its costs via intercontinental trade routes. Further, should I kill the barb city and settle on the Z as my border with Mardoc? I don't see how I can claim the pigs long-term otherwise.

Overview shots:

I've been wondering what's in that area east of the X/Y for so long after my scout died; now it's revealed to be ... nothing. Nary a forest. lol I'm thinking Y will be the consensus tile?

Demographics:

So, I was last place in score last turn and first this time. This game is actually pretty tight in that respect, in population (which score is of course mostly based on), in cities settled, etc.

Other random question: Old Harry apparently wants me to harass my neighbours. Should I try and hit Miguelito's front city, cutting his stone hopefully at the time he's attempting to build the Pyramids? I feel that this would result in massive rage and militarize my border at a time I might not want it heavily militarized (beyond the obvious bounds of safety). But it would be effective harassment. mischief

Didn't see this while I was writing. Yeah, I agree Miguelito is going for the 'Mids. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the ETA for the MoM would be a bit after t70. I should have the marble in my borders eot62, and it'll take a few turns to improve since it's a quarry and in tundra. With the quarry complete, it should be an eight-turn build. That seems slow, but unless someone else has both marble and more forests to chop, and that person is Alhazard, since I don't think Mardoc will have the tech (unless maybe he ignores Currency?) and Miguelito should be occupied with the Pyramids, I'm not sure anyone will be able to do it faster. I saved gold again this turn, so I once again can still tech Code of Laws instead if that's everyone's better judgement. smile

Edit: Aaand ... I just realized it's Masonry I should be teching before Calendar, if this is the plan, because I need to build the quarry before I start building the wonder. lol @ me.

I'll asume Mardoc will take the barb city for himself. He most likely had visoin on it for quite awhile now and have plans for the city already. With that in mind I don't think that settling Z would be posible nor stealing the pigs (Mardoc have religion and free monuments for culture)

Harrasing Miguelito is a tricky one he'll rpobably finish Mids in a 5t timeframe, can you do something about it in that time?

Retep, I updated my last post, so you might want to look at it again depending on when you started writing. You're probably right about the pigs, so it'd be a moot point anyway. As for Miguelito, no, I don't think I'll be able to get my units up there in that time frame, even though I have a new galley able to transport two chariots to the mainland immediately (too much rough terrain in the way).

I feel a bit better...

But is the map a Cylinder? Having Mardoc on two sides is going to be a bit tricky. I think eventually you'll probably need to make him your target - expanding north is going to leave you with long borders :/.

If you can get that X towards Miguelito I'd be very happy with that border. Grabbing the hill N or NW of the Banana that Alhazard should have got would be good too, but I think pushing Mardoc is going to be more important for you here, so more scouting of him please! (If you are the same distance apart as Alhazard and Miguelito you can probably only fit two or three cities in before you hit Mardoc's water.)

GNP-scrying works by:
- put research on 100%,
- select a tech with one arrow pre-requisite that you know no-one else has (religion etc)
- note your GNP to get your baseline
- select Calendar
- look at/refresh your GNP again
- if its the same as your baseline no-one knows it yet
- if its higher then you're getting known-tech bonus from one or more people

Growing your cities bigger with Calendar resources is good anyway and if you can get MoM too I'd prefer it in your backlines (if the build time isn't affected). What is your maintenance in Nanjing? If it's over 8 then a courthouse might be a good build...

I think the marble will need a fort to hook it - is that right? Edit: nearly - either a fort and a road or a city are needed. A quarry would only link to your network if there was a river to use as a port. Settling on the marble might be the right move..

Preview edit: I'd probably try to settle X for the hill bonus, I guess you'll discover more next turn. And you should only harras if he's just defending with warriors and you can kill a city, otherwise it's probably not worth it...

Fort, not quarry actually.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Commodore, Old Harry, good call on the fort. Thanks. smile Old Harry, the city I'm thinking of building the MoM in is Xian, in the southeast, so definitely in the backlines. Maintenance is definitely not over eight in Nanjing; I think it was more like four or five (and the others are less, obviously). I guessed that's what you meant by GNP-scrying; I forgot to do so again though (again, I'm pretty sure no one knows it, though). Settling on the marble is interesting; that would get it a lot faster, but it might be a pretty bad city otherwise, unless there's seafood in the fog. Also, would I still need to know Masonry to receive the resource? I think so, but can't quite remember ...

Thanks for the thoughts on city locations. Also, that's an interesting perspective regarding future expansion. I had been assuming I'd be conquering from Miguelito, since he's closest, but maybe you're right that that would make things awkward. However, as Mardoc is the most experienced player here, I'm concerned conquering him might be the most difficult. But that's a ways down the road.

In even more important news, an exciting naming scheme has finally occurred to me! Before I can implement it, though, I need to ask - what kinds of characters in names are they that break the game, again? I'm specifically thinking about colons; are they okay, or do they cause issues like I believe apostrophes do? Thanks!

I guess the land between you and mardoc isn't that great, so maybe its not worth fighting over...

and yes you'll need masonry.

May I present to you: turn 60, complete with graphs! (On one person. ...)

First - good thing I thought to keep that chariot just in range, just in case this precise thing happened:

eek That wasn't a good battle to have to take. Spoiler: I won, barely. I founded in place, even though, Old Harry, it's unfortunately not a plains hill for the bonus. I was tired of thinking about it, and I'd rather have that silver sooner than later.

Home on the range:

That new galley (1SE of Nanjing) is bringing new military (an axe and a chariot) over to the mainland to defend spot X, which I feel I should claim with the settler about to be whipped in Nanjing. Also, I'm building more workers, because I need to whip something and I realized I need more.

Now for something new - graphs! Sadly I only have them on one person as of yet:

Top Cities, because why not?

And demographics:

(GNP was 103 after ending turn and losing the known tech bonus. Speaking of which, GNP-scrying indicates no one has Calendar as of yet.)

Edit: Really wanted to have the new naming scheme in place for t60, but I got in late and was already ending turn well past my window. And again, if any lurkers missed my question above, I'd like to know if it's okay to put apostrophes and/or colons into city names, or if it breaks something (I vaguely recall something about that); I couldn't find anything online.
