RB PBEM #1 - Discussion Thread - No Players!

Pretty funny - Dreylin is poking fun at Ruff for seeing a tech trading conspiracy between Sooooo, Athlete, and M_H while Sooooo is trying to orchestrate just such a conspiracy smile

I don't think soooo wants to back Ruff into a corner like that...can stolen techs be traded with NO Tech Brokering?

He has to know that he is effectively going to be playing 1v1 with Ruff when Ruff has visibility into all of his cities...and Dreylin can help out Ruff, but sooooo can't get any support.

And Dreylin has HBR on mh and Athlete...but more importantly he has the artist from Music and a perfect bomb site! If Dreylin cottons on fast m-h and Athlete could be out of this game in no time at all!

I'm also wondering when and where the first military action takes place. mh and athlete don't even have cardboard-quality defenses, as half their cities seem to be completely empty! Dreylin's horse archers could walk right through much of the west without breaking a sweat. Darned RBers, everyone is polite to a fault. lol

The abiding question I have in the east is why Ruff continues to build so many wonders. I guess I don't see what the value is in tying up the capital and best city on wonders for so many turns on end. The other players are guilty of this too, although to a lesser extent. I think this may be a function of the Quick setting; everyone sees 10 turns for a wonder, and doesn't realize that "10t" on Quick is not at all the same thing as on Normal, and extremely different from "10t" on Epic speed. 10t Quick actually equals 22.5t on Epic!

To be honest, I don't think Ruff has much of a plan at all. Stonehenge for border pops is fair enough, but he chickened out of the Great Spy gambit. Now he's going to build the AP for Dreylin (who can out-vote him as he'll surely have more Confu pop), whilst Dreylin snags the far-more-useful Hagia Sofia.

Assuming Dreylin cleans up mh and/or athlete in the West then the major show-down will be between Dreylin & sooooo. And Ruff - if he keeps up his current thinking - will tip off Dreylin of any build up by sooooo.

I don't know much about how espionage works, but if soooo keeps buffing his economy, shouldn't he be able to negate the effects of the spy bomb pretty fast using the slider if/when he wants to? (He mentioned something about that himself in his thread so if it's a realistic option then I think he's well aware of it).

Indeed. Civ is a snowball game, where the leading powers tend to get stronger, not weaker. At this point, it's really between Dreylin and sooooo; I don't see any of the others having too good of a chance to win. Of course a lot can change, but I'd be surprised if one of those two didn't eventually emerge as the winner.

Dreylin has played the middleman role to perfection so far. I'm quite impressed by how well he has done in such a difficult spot on the map. thumbsup

If Ruff doesn't steal any techs then I think that it's unlikely that sooooo will be able to eat significantly into the EP deficit without significantly harming his own tech rate. As such, he might be better off letting Ruff steal techs which he's traded as the benefits of being able to operate unobserved in this sort of game are much higher than any 'lost' beakers from not trading the techs to Ruff.

All 5 player FFAs resolve to 3v2 it seems...considering that 4 of the players are on SANCTA I'm wondering if they apply any of the lessons from that game here. Specifically...oh wait tongue

More specifically I wonder if Dreylin will take his advantage now (I'm guessing no), if Ruff will realise and accept he is no longer a front runner and needs to support Dreylin (with reciprocation), and if m-h beefs up his defences now or tries to keep on running the paper defence.

That last is true, but there's still a difference. The Quick speed 10t is the amount of time that any enemy force would have to reach the city before the wonder is completed and the city can go back to military. As Epic and Marathon favor the wargame because units have more time to walk, Quick favors the builder game because units take so long to get anywhere and because a defender can be built very quickly.
