440 milpower, 5 cities from eating CS, victor 3 established in capital which is 3-turning embolon longships. 5 turns from PP and oligarchy, which would be 5 turns from TV as well if i hadn't messed up on era score (at least thrawn should have trouble with this too since you need to actually contact people to raid them). longships also cost only 1 gold in maintenance so you can run Maritime Industries/Conscription/TV/Urban Planning in Oligarchy and spam them like crazy.
compare thrawn's nubia on the same turn:
i really don't like where this is going
best guess is thrawn eats all 4 of their team's CS in the first 60 turns, then either drops 20 longships on the weakest opponent or sends 7 at each of the other teams. the latter is more efficient for norway in terms of total pillages UNLESS there is a portuguese team in the mix and he can throw all 20 at them and eat 8 traders :|

Do not want.
We really want someone else to take the brunt of that attack. That someone else will probably be Portugal.
We should be thinking about what we can do to either outpace or slow down Thrawn without being his target, but we really, really don't want to be his target.
Get the damn biremes.

TAD and I both reeeeally want to take Portugal still, but i think deep down in my heart i know you're right
maybe there's someone we can partner w portugal to make it possible? like japan or australia? especially japan with crusade could perhaps fight off the longship swarm. but if 20 longships descend on us i think we're dead even if we nominally survive lol

Australia probably guarantees the always war situation. Thrawn won't think twice about +100% production for 10 turns, and he'll likely never give you peace afterwards.
Japan provides a nice combat bonus and can definitely build a nice empire, but they're no guarantee to stand against Norway and no guarantee to still be there at 7.
I don't like our chances of keeping safe in the early game with anyone else.
On the other hand, Spain is basically Portugal lite and could easily be around still. Phoenicia has some nice gold generation potential of their own. And I really won't be shocked if both other teams think along the same lines we are and decide against painting a target on their backs, allowing us to sneak in Portugal at #7 anyway.
All that said it's your game, and if you two think you can handle the defensive requirements, the rewards are certainly there. I don't envy your choice.

If you're sick of Phoenicia that's as good a reason as any. We do this for fun, after all.
TAD isn't exactly a sentimental builder guy either, if he wants to go with the potentially vulnerable econ powerhouse then I assume he thinks you can defend them.
I don't see any sense in letting randomness decide here. Portugal is clearly the majority preference between the two of you who will actually be playing. Don't let me stop you.

i think we'd better bump japan into the top tier of partners with the dutch and china though, as they are the third civ with what is effectively a galley UU, and they can take crusade if we're able to get the relevant tiles in time. i am envisioning a slow burn japan whereby i open victor 3 just like thrawn does, spread crusade + tithe to TAD's cities along the trader path, and dedicate a core city to nothing but galley spam from a very early date. then i will mostly ignore harbors and focus on holy sites + campi, planning to buy a great admiral with faith, and try for, well
for this, pretty much...
guess i really haven't changed huh

Yeah, a turtle like Japan would help immensly.
It falls upon me to be the little old trader.
