You can still use Ait-R and mouse-over the tile the city is on, the cursor will turn green and you'll rebase there.

Oh yes, I remember talk about that now.

Cheers for the tip, although I think it was a moot point since he had no aircraft with movement left.

Anyway, some interesting chats this afternoon. Firstly with Dave:

14:03 me: afternoon/morning

14:04 David: morning

me: how's it going?

David: Novice or Spaceman?

me: space

David: pretty good, staying with a friend in New Orleans

yourself?

me: at work

:-(

still weekend tomorrow

14:05 David: true smile

so, your post in the UN thread

I don't know reallly how to respond

did you guys fail to stop the vote?

14:06 me: not even tried, but i doubt it's possible

i just heard that you were going for a diplo "victory" and haven't been motivated to open the save since it seems in such poor taste

14:07 David: I don't even know if Shoot voted for me to be honest, last I spoke to him he was mulling it over

me: yeah he said to me he had a decision to make - i didn't ask what it was, though

14:08 but i don't think he has much motivation for the game to continue so i'd be surprised if he didn't vote for oyu

David: got the dialogue box last turn, spent a day stewing on it and asked my lurkers

really unsure myself, since it is such a cheesy victory condition

but the overall lurker consensus was I should go for it

to quote Seven:

14:09 100% go for it. If it works it's totally your opponents' fault for not
a) Razing the AP city,
b) Avoiding having a city of the AP religion or
c) Having enough AP votes to prevent it, or making sure that one player always has enough votes alone that the option can't come up,

... any of which were easily available to them. The AP victory is a silly mechanic but it's not banned. Just don't be disappointed if they figure out a way to stop it somehow.

14:10 me: well i have to say i disagree

it's purely a single player mechanic and is meaningless in the context of multi player

you don't achieve a win in reality, it's just a way of ending the game

14:11 i will view the game as undecided rather than anyone was a winner

not banning it was simply an oversight presumably because no-one thought anyone would actually do it

14:12 David: fair enough

me: and you won't even win diplomatically if we never send the save on

so there

14:14 David: we don't even know if Shoot voted for me, if I won diplomatically, this could all be a rather academic argument

14:15 me: yes i appreciate that

David: in the event that he did, we can always keep going and the two of you can continue eviscerating my empire, I have no problem with playing on

me: it's the thought that counts, though

i thought you were having fun

the last few moves you've made have been good

very impressive in fact

David: or we could reload if you and Darrell feel strongly enough about this before I call for the AP vote

14:16 me: yeah darrell did a lot of moves

i doubt he could replay them

14:17 David: I still have the 1780 save

so he would only have to replay 1785

14:18 at any rate, we have options on that front

are you saying you don't want to play on simply because I would consider an AP victory?

14:21 me: sorry on phone

David: it's all good

13 minutes

14:34 me: i don't know the mechanics for playing on - do we get "just a few more turns"?

14:35 in which case i don't mind playing on and you can take your moral victory if you like - i suppose that's possible

i just don't wnat the game to end cos i'm having fun!

14:37 David: sorry, internet wigged out

14:38 would imagine you are, burning all my cities :P

but, fwiw, have been enjoying it too

been a challenge, but it's been enjoyable and I've been trying to make my thread helpful to anyone else who is fighting modern wars on a water heavy map

14:39 just saw an opportunity and took it

14:40 would Novice know the "just a few more turns" mechanics?

I thought it was you could play on infinitely

14:52 me: well yes in SP

not sure about PBEMs

And a later chat with Darrell:

14:53 me: i've been chatting to dave

15:18 Darrell: yeah?

what did he say?

15:43 me: i was going to send you the transcript but new gmail is being a bit funny on my work laptop

15:44 he doesn't seem to mind doing the "few more turns" option if that is available in PBEMs

he has gone for AP victory - the lurkers, including seven, supported it

Darrell: not all the lurkers

that I know for sure

me: well no

well i don't know actually

Darrell: what is the "few more turns" option anyway?

15:45 me: you know when you win a game on SP

Darrell: I have had at least one lurker state they are against it

me: then it says you can play on

Darrell: oh oh

yes

umm

I would probably have zero interest in continuing tbh

what would be the point?

me: to wipe dave out

where is his AP city|?

15:47 Darrell: I am asking rego

he should know since he built it

he says it si on the 4x4 island

15:48 me: how long do we have to raze it?

just this turn?

Darrell: correct

15:49 me: hmmm, i;m guessing it';s just out of range

1 turn too late

Darrell: yeah

me: seven's line (said to dave) is that it's other civs' fault for not making it impossible in the first place

Darrell: the funny thing is I assumed it was a joke when I first saw it

me: amongst other lines

haha

you mentioned it so off hand

15:50 Darrell: or I would have gifted my only jewish city

that is what beaker did in pb1 when rego/sunrise were trying to machinate the same ending

me: we could gift ours conceivably then

15:51 Darrell: I don't know that it works

me: although one of them is investment

Darrell: because I have to receive them

for pb its easy you just log back in

for pbem the order is important

me: oh yes

Darrell: I am not 100% sure

I can alwasy gift them back

but I don't think it will work

me: yeah

i did talk about that to novice actually

he said turn order was an issue

Darrell: honestly it lowers us to their level

15:52 me: i think it's more heroic than that

Darrell: lol

I am so ambivalent about anythign to do with the game at this point, that I'll do whatever you guys want

me: yeah

it has kinda soured things hasn't it

or were you there already?

Darrell: my preference would be to just lose with honor

15:53 no, this did it

When i realized it wasn't just a joke I was...not upset exactly, but not impressed either

me: well yeah i did anger last night

Darrell: When I lose, I like to be impressed

me: now i'm just meh

i'd rather just not play a PBEM again

15:54 Darrell: Its un-american but I am more of a "enjoy the journey" player than a "win or its been a horrible experience" player. So I did enjoy this game win or lose, but losing this way feels kind of wrong

me: yeah, although we were heading for a contrived space win i suppose

that wouldn';t be much better

Darrell: true, but why?

me: although it would be funny

Darrell: because we didn't want to ruin the efforst of the other players

15:55 we were originally palnning on a reload to resume the space race

but DIDN'T WANT TO CHEAPEN THE EFFORTS OF THE OTHER PLAYERS

Sorry for shouting, now I am getting a bit worke dup wink

me: heh, caps lock added ofr emphasis

i was never in favour of a reload

unless we go alll the way back

:-)

15:56 Darrell: lol

me: anyway, darrell, we've having some problems opening the save - you might need to resend it - do you have a version that might work better, one from before you hit end turn?

Darrell: that would be faster, we'd all just resign

I have a version saved very near the end of my turn yes :P

15:57 I don't exactly remember my last actions so I'd have to make my best guess :D

me: might be worth sending that ATHOUGH MAKE SURE YOU DO NOTHING DIFFERENT

Darrell: I'll do my best, I pinky promise

me: i can't emphasise that enough

well, with bold and italics maybe

and a larger font size

15:59 Darrell: if you put s around words it *bolds it

I think # is for #italics#

hmm

italics

its _

which really should be for underline

16:00 gtg

I will probably send you the save and let you decide

16:01 let me know if you play the second save, so I can post something funny

me: ok will do

laters

So lurkers... Not that I really want to be studying this, but how does the AP election work in pbems? When are the votes counted? Can we capture a bunch of Ottoman buddhist cities and swing the vote in our favour? Dave goes before Shoot - will Shoot get the opportunity to recapture the cities before the votes are counted?
I have to run.

Quote:Shoot,

We are open to both signing a NAP until Apollo. A couple of points:

1. The NAP would expire end of turn you build Apollo, or end of the cycle 9t from now (original expiration), at our discretion. This is to preserve our admittedly not earned first strike capability.

2. Part of the definition of "Aggression" for this NAP include providing material aid to enemies. So, no more providing military to Dave. Frankly we are also pretty tired of this game and its just prolonging things. If you have any deals over the next turn or two you've agreed to its okay to let those execute but after that let's try and speed this up for all our sakes :-).

Darrell & Nospace

For reference.

If he voted Davy then obviously he opted to speed things up for everyone. wink

Obviously the AP is jewish - anyway, Dave has two jewish cities size 5 and 6 in strike range (the AP city is just out of range).

Shoot has jewish cities size 13 and 4 in range, and several big ones just out of reach, of course.

Also, Darrell's only jewish city is size 12 and is also just out of strike range for our forces.

We only have one jewish city, a size 5 one named Side Fund recently captured from Dave.

Currently we have 5 votes, Darrell has 12, Dave has 30 and Shoot has 86. Dave needs 99 votes to win.

That phrase wasn't entirely accurate as I mentioned before in the sense that some of us are enjoying this game still.

Russia costs 1,111 gold these days, by the way.

Ok, capturing *and holding* the size 13 city (mackoti) is possible. Last turn it had three rifles and an infantry. It's on a hill which means it's harder to take but also easier to defend. We have 12 marines in range. Quick odds on the spreadsheet suggest that we might lose 2 or 3 marines, so we'd have 5 or 6 defending, plus one airlifted. We would be subject to aerial assault. And we're not sure what's on boats nearby, but otherwise it's whatever Shoot has in sunrise. Given it's more of a backline city, hopefully a bit less.

World Series is size 6 and we don't know what's defending it. He's evidently moved units out of there, but could also have reinforced it. We could always go for Leningrad. We have a lot of units around there - 7 ready to attack and more ready to defend.

Or we could just buy Russia.
