Agreed. He's had to have known that #1 was out of reach, solely by being next to Spullla (and Imp hasn't been great on this cramped map), but playing kingmaker and ending up as #2 or #3 isn't a bad deal out of that. Also, if you don't trust your current set of allies to do anything right, leaving now when it's useful to you is prudent.

You can't have a reload for stupidity, else there'd be a case a reload almost every turn.
Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. This game was reloaded due to a misclick, when Kalin alt-clicked India instead of Control-clicking them, thus mistakenly declaring war on them.
I have to run.

This. We know that Dantski & Nakor are isolated from the *REAL* CoW and he is Spulla's best possible ally. It gives them a secure border to go and destroy Jowy and go after Kathlete should they desire it. Out of all the players attacking them, Dantski has antagonised India the least, and I believe it is his best chance to get to the final 2/3.
I would have a lot of admiration for Dantski if he had the strength to make this switch. He has nothing to lose from this, if he switches he gains a firm ally who could well propel them to the end game. If he threatens a switch, he could get a better deal from the CoW than he currently has, although that may only be a short-term benefit before being ganged up on by Jowy/Kathlete/Whosit.

No matter how Dantski decides, the COW attack will run out of steam pretty soon. After the first wave, who's going to send more troops except Jovy who has no other choice? Kathlete is about to build the GL which will make their allies think twice about sendind more troops or focussing on their own economy. You know, it's pretty easy to convince yourself that Spullla was crippled enough...
Anyway, following this game is a lot of fun, that's for sure. Feels like reading a Jeffery Deaver book with those many twists

Oh wow! This game sure doesn't disappoint a lurker as a source of drama and news every day. I'd say that as of now, Spullla is now the odds-on favourite to win this thing once again
Sullla needs to drop the self-pity and start playing some detail-oriented master-level Civ again, but I think he will do so.

They have lost one city (a small one, but still their only access to the inner sea), many tile improvements and their tech lead has diminished. Kathlete and Whosit have a whole lot more land to expand into while Spullla will have to fight themselves through a wall of phalanxes.

Spullla does need to be taken down if the others want to win and this may be the best and only chance to really do so. They've really messed up repeatedly though trying to pull this off.
I will note though that by doing so he sets himself up to be the clear #2 in the game. If the goal is to place as high as possible in the game, I'd argue this is the way to do it.

This move from Dantski is .. interesting given that he was the first to mention the need to attack India a long time ago.

I am afraid Dantski will start having some really short term problem, as HRE will have to mobilize and go after him, while Spulla have to defend/go agaainst Jowy/Kathlete.
If he pulled out to early (within 1-2t) Whosit might even embark/move his praet vs Dantski and that might be ugly...

They haven't even tried to talk to people, have they? Korea didn't know about Whosit until just now, but they have been trying to interact diplomatically.
