We also had a bit of a chat on our next tech path. As you can see, we will have Gunpowder in 2t. We have about 3.5 more turns of Great Merchant gold.

The techs in question were Civil Service, Banking, or Divine Right. We figured that merchant gold was good for maybe 1 of those techs before running out.

In the end, we went with a plan of Banking next. CS is good, but our capital is not a great Bureaucracy capital, maces are already (sort of) obsolete, and while the farm chaining would get us some food, it wasn't as much of a benefit as Banking. 2 banks, in Celebrity Jeopardy (shrine city) and Church Lady (Nat Epic merchant farm) will net us about 50gpt between the 2 of them.

We're due another Great Merchant in about 9t, so that should let us pick up some more tech. Our current breakeven is about 100bpt (yikes), so hopefully with some courthouses, grocers and banks we should be able to raise that up quite a bit. Not to mention our new fancy Academy in Matt Foley.

After Banking we will probably head to Civil Service. The reasoning for Divine Right is a) Spiral Minaret to go with our Apostolic Palace, and b) it's another path to Nationalism, which we could possibly acquire with Gunpowder. Philosophy doesn't actually get us anything until we want to head to Liberalism / Communism, and although it's a few beakers less than DR, the Spiral Minaret would be useful.

We're actually feeling fairly optimistic about this game right now (cue crashing omen of doom). With Yuri's defense being somewhat.... "lacking", I think it's certainly possible that we could assimilate his entire empire (at least the mainland parts?) with the troops that we have now plus trickles of reinforcements.

I did joke that another reason for teching Divine Right was c) building Versailles in Commodore's lands devil, but there's a lot of reasons why attacking Commodore right now doesn't seem like a good idea. 1) After his early attack, he has been a good friend to us. 2) His land sucks. 3) He has proven that unlike some people, he actually knows what he's doing in warfare. 4) Did I mention his land sucks? 5) We'd be attacking at roughly tech parity. 6) His land really, really sucks. So I think a plan there would be more along the lines of tech up to Rifles or maybe Curs / Cavs and attack then, should we want to. Our time is probably better spent preparing for the eventual Krill boot-stomp however....

Regoarrarr gave me a homework assignment to dot map yuri's lands and my first attempt is below

Shakuras - keep
Bel'shir - keep
aiur - keep
Korhal - raze, replace 2W
Ash'arak - raze, replace 1S
Mar Sara - raze, replace 1SE (to make room for a city to use the clams)
Xil - keep
Monolyth - keep
Filler City - 1N,2W of mar sara
Filler City -- either 3N or 4N of Superfans
Filler City - 1N 3W of.monolyth

I think that looks pretty good. The other thing is that he may have some of those filler cities (like the one to the west of Monlyth / North of Mon Sara) - our map data may be out of date.

Also, he probably has some cities on those western islands.

We could get like 15 cities out of this? rolleye

Yeah, I left the islands undone on purpose. Between them either not being in the screenshot or our info being way outdated it's unclear whether we will be capturing or settling these spots. I don't think he messed any of those up, but we'll see. Odds are Inferno Island cities are going to be all keepers, unless he really messed up the cities he put in the eastern half of it.

I would also note that it may be worth keeping Korhal in place if it comes with a lot of infra. How many buildings and population are worth picking up those 2 grassland tiles? Ash'arak is probably reze & replace regardless, and Mar Sara is unless it has something spectacular; otherwise we leave that clam tile unused.

We could also add in some fishing cities on the mainland: the desert west of shakuras or the plains hill east of belshir (after we move korhal). But those may not be worth the bother, and probably come after we finish the war altogether.

Edit: Another thing is I did not particularly note the border with Commodore. I think we have good enough relations that we can keep the cities as is. We should also be open to the possibility that Commodore comes in and takes Monolyth - hopefully no further than that, but it is something to be aware of.

Turn rolled. I peeked in just to have a look around. No new units in Shakuras or Monlyth (the 2 cities that we can see)

Also no new techs from Yuri that I could see, but Commodore did research Gunpowder (we'll have it next turn). He doesn't have Paper at least, so we don't have to worry about him trading it with Scooter or Nakor

Couldnt they trade it to him for Paper?

They can trade anything with him because only one party needs Paper.

Yes that is true that Commodore CAN trade Gunpowder to those guys. But they can't get Education in return, since Paper is a pre-req to Edu.
