The Undercity remained quiet in the day as the party moved through its decaying streets. One building stood out fromt he rest; eschewing the ornate architecture of the rest of its surroundings, it was a squat hexagonal strucutre of dark grey stone. Unmistakably a fortress, it was marked on the previous explorers' map simply as "The Citadel." Outside its gate stood one of the guardians that had been activated by the group's unfortunate predecessors: a spherical construct of what looked like bronze around 20 feet high supported by a mass of metallic tentacles and other appendages. As the party approached, the guardian creaked into life.
Dante drew his sword and flew through the air at the strange guardian, striking one of the tentacles with full force. The construct was barely scratched, and retaliated by grabbing at him with a clawed arm. Instinctively he dodged away from the claw, but the arm hit him anyway, sending him flying 50 feet back into a pile of rubble. The party's other warriors were finding their attacks similarly ineffective.
"Testing indicates that this robot has one weakness," observed GlaDOs. "It only seems to focus on one target at a time. So if we send one of our number to distract it the rest might be able to sneak past."
"You volunteering?" said the Creeper.
"Well," GlaDOs countered, "since we are trying to dispose of untrustworthy members of the group anyway, why not use one as a test subject?" This plan was met with general agreement.
Meanwhile, Guybrush had called out Morte the skull by slapping him with a dead fish instead of the customary gauntlet. "You scurvy knave of a skull! I challenge you to a piratey insult duel to the death!"
At the same time Cho'Gath spoke up. "I declare Morte to be innocent!"
Threepwood looked visibly deflated. "Er... I am rubber, you are glue?" as he unenthusiastically waved his cutlass at Morte. The skull dodged and latched his teeth onto the pirate's throat. "Yarr! Arg!" shouted Guybrush, dropping his sword but his screams were quickly cut off.
"Waste of a perfectly good test subject," muttered GlaDOs.
"So who else is innocent then Cho?" asked Jarlaxle.
"Well I was working on investigating Frank Fontaine but I don't know what happened to me on the first night." replied the civilized beast.
"That's because I displaced you in time," said Akemi. This was instantly regarded with suspicion, with the general consensus that messing with other members of the group in this way was, at best, completely irresponsible, and at worst, deliberate sabotage.
"Hey! Listen! You get to be the distraction Akemi. Try to survive as best as you can!" said Navi.
Akemi gestured at the construct and tried to place it in some sort of stasis. For a moment it stopped moving as the rest of the group started running past. Then sparks crackled off its body as it started moving again, first slowly, then faster and faster. Akemi turned and ran. Moving with inhuman speed, the guardian caught up with her in seconds and slapped her with a metal tentacle, knocking the wind out of her. The last thing she saw was one of the metellic claws descending towards her face.
