Yeah. It feels like the franchise has devolved from grand epic strategy to a series of minigames.

What other games in the genre are popular nowadays? Are people still playing Humankind? Any others?

I wish I was more excited about this.

Humankind had such a promising start and then Sega just gave up on it.

I'm with you all about 7. Completely underwhelmed by what I see for their vision of the game. Maybe I'll follow some YouTubers to reevaluate after it's release but im not spending $100 on it.

I'll do a writeup here once I get a few games under my belt. (My early access comes in 3 February) I am pretty excited to play it, though I expect it'll be somewhat of a disappointment like most Patch 1.0 strategy games these days. Still... cautiously optimistic. I like a lot of it's ideas at least, but it still depends on their execution.

I liked Humankind too, but it was a bit too much "civ didn't do this, so we did" without ever being a cohesive whole. Old World I didn't like, but many people seem too.
Beyond historical settings, there's Endless Space/Endless Legend, Age of Wonders and Stellaris, all very good.

Btw  preview embargo dropped yesterday, and all the usual suspects have videos out. I recommend Quill18's stuff, pretty chill guy and he goes into the mechanics.

I bought Old World on sale last month and have been loving it. Much more a spiritual successor to Civ IV than the subsequent civ games were, and still getting monthly bugfix/balance patches (and DLC releases). I know RB tried one 2v2 teamer game that ended inconspicuously with no followup a couple years ago, which is disappointing in retrospect.

Partially my fault - I proposed the game in idleness, then it came just as I had a huge wave of work & moving across the country to sort through, leaving me not only no time to report, which always sucks, but not even time to properly learn the game! So my team got rolled and there was no interest in another. :/

I think Old World would've been a lot more popular for MP if FFA was viable. A shame really

6 was a total overload for me. To many things to worry about. For me Civ peaked at 3 and 4.

I have no idea when I'll hit another strategy game like Civ

Not very impressed. Too much roleplay. This trend started with Civ5 (screw you Trip neenerneener ) but got covered up by other problems which made Civ6 the game where the series was transitioning to roleplay. This transition should have happened in Civ5 but Trip's mistakes stalled this.
