I must continue to play catchup. It's okay though, I enjoy not being everybody's dogpile target. I have four cities and my demographics are average, although I suspect I'll sink back to the bottom for a while since I'm not due another expansion for some time.
Thoth, on the other hand, just settled his fifth city, as did Krill:
I love you too, Krill.
And Lewwyn is about to settle his sixth city:

From civstats, Serdoa captured a city from Pindicator. Caledorn then crashed the game and Serdoa had to replay... Luckily he captured it on the second attempt, too. Let's hope nobody got screwed by bad rerolls.

Shouldn't those bowmen be defending your cities instead of poking at my borders, Pindicator?
Traded maps with Scooter/Lewwyn. They are big and have a lot of land to expand into as well. I offered map trades to Commodore and Thoth to make them aware of the situation.

Okay lurkers, I need your opinions. What is the best spot for a city - where the settler is now, 1E of the settler, or 1NE of the settler?

Well, it's definitely not 1E of the settler.

Not even to stop Thoth settling up on him?
In place means krill can't fit another city towards you and shares a lot of stuff. I can't think of anything in favour of ne...

I think I'd settle in place. Leaving a row of non-resource tiles between you isn't necessarily a bad thing.
If you know what I mean.

Short recap of the game so far from a global perspective.
Krill used his IMP trait to race out to five (aggressively placed) cities. He's then gone vertical while the others (including me) have kept expanding to six or seven cities, which should be enough to crash your economy. So the others seem to have caught up with Krill in the demos for food and hammers, but his research strength is probably a lot better. He's also been a runaway in MFG for some turns, it's unclear to me what he's spent those hammers on, workers and libraries, perhaps. Although his culture graph isn't that steep. Of course my culture graph dwarves everybody else's. If his naming scheme is to be believed he also has at least five warriors and six chariots, but that's just what's needed for defense.
What's going to happen next - I think Krill might time his next expansion wave to a hanging gardens build, he should be first to Mathematics.
As for me, I'll have an incoming GP for either a shrine or the Pyramids to improve my economy. I'm also considering going Aesthetics next instead of Mathematics-Currency, so I can use the Paya and SoZ for some failgold economy. Oh wait, I don't get failgold if I finish the wonder myself. That.. uh.. sucks. That affects my whole strategy. *Back to thinking box*
