Yeah, we knew you had visibility. I just couldn't see how you could defend an invasion on the your Argos island without committing troops away from the mainland. Our navy was big enough to protect the galleons.

And getting gifted 200k in power always helps.

Yeah, I really forgot about mackoti's navy when I was scoping out his cities. Maybe I should have held off on gifting for a while but I didn't want to have mackoti crumble, especially with that scary looking stack you had spaceman.

I was scared that you were going to try to boat my northern cities for revenge, spaceman. Actually, that was my biggest fear ever since the botched knight invasion (which may have paid some dividends if we had stuck to our original plan).

In my head, I was vaguely planning to build a mini raiding squad from Sian's ex-islands, but we really had to concentrate all our forces on mackoti. We sailed about 9 land troops past all your land to capture mackoti's eastern island city.

I came in late so it was never about revenge for me. I just loved taking out all those knights - it was magical!

I'm through the NS7's thread and the Lurker thread. Seven, very nice diplo work! It certainly played its role in my choice of the Cataphract target, even if Nicolae and Lewwyn weren't so impressed smile

I see the general opinion is that I should've attacked NS7. So you really think that, with the information I had at the time, it was the better decision?

* I played the opening poorly, and had to heavily invest in late expansion/land development. At the time prior to the attack, I don't have any spare units for scouting
* I don't have much information about how NS7's war with Mackoti is going. There are no messages about cities being captured, and the power of both opponents keeps growing, so I can assume it's a stand-off with huge armies on both sides
* I don't know whether NS7 can spare units to defend our attack and counter-attack into our land, but I do know that they have a very scary force. And Galleons, against which we have no defence
* Possible outcomes of our attack on NS7: a) NS7 defend, then counter-attack and capture our core cities, or even outright kill us; b) Both we and Mackoti make gains, NS7 survive, we have to live with a very strong neighbour who can draft and build powerful navy and is furious with us; c) Both we and Mackoti make gains, NS7 die, we have a new runaway in Mackoti
* Sian has power comparable to us, but we have stronger units. Probable outcome of the attack is that we end up with twice the territory we had, and have a powerful but friendly neighbour who is hindered by a war with another powerful empire

Basically an attack on NS7 may or may not help us to stop NS7, but our own chances of winning don't improve. An attack on Sian is better from the point of view of improving our chances, not from the point of view of stopping NS7

I'm not saying that all decisions I made in this game were good ones. They weren't. But I strongly believe that attack on Sian rather than on NS7 was the right one

In terms of results I don't think you would have gotten a better one by doing anything else. You were in legitimate contention for the win at the end.

I think you played it right.

In hindsight, yeah, I agree, we went for the correct choice. The last (penultimate?) update showed Mackoti and NS7 beating one another into the ground, while we just captured a landblob. So we had a good window of being economically aggressive to catch up and be competitive.

Sure, NS7 had more cities, but so many more of those cities were distant iceballs, while we had more mainland cities that had been growing cottages for us. So we had more long-term potential (but of course, long term doesn't mean squat if the game doesn't last that long!). There was still the matter of the ~10k beakers we needed to make up before Mackoti and NS7 decided enough was enough!
