[PB16 SPOILERS] SevenSpirits goes off the deep end and finds Krill

(November 18th, 2013, 18:38)SevenSpirits Wrote: P.S. I guess encountering an opponent on turn 4 is the reason we should optimally have not selected a tech until now. But with the length of turns and number of reloads we've been having, that would have been playing with fire.

There aren't many games that have opponents 8 tiles apart...PB15 has players that far apart and the map is 52*24 for 7 players. This one is significantly larger.

Message for Serdoa: Settling in place and warrior first would have gotten us a kill if Retep went worker first you know.

Krill and I are not particularly enamored with the map right now.

Krill's been trying out a more production-focused micro plan, with mining-BW and 2 warriors followed by settler. It reveals copper and gets the second city out about 9 turns faster (and then catches up on worker count and population afterwards), but obviously misses out on a ton of cottage turns and in fact doesn't build those cottages at all. Wheel is also delayed until after the settler so there may be some logistical issues in actually connecting the copper, especially since we'll only have one worker.

I am not sure if this is the way to go. We do have a few turns to decide though: I set tech to mining, but we can switch back to wheel/pottery in the next few turns if we should desire to do so, without impacting the wheel/pottery plan at all. (We were getting pottery a couple turns early, and teching mining after.)

As for our scout, we have a couple options (and we're best off waiting until next turn to decide for sure, to at least confirm it's retep and not netherlands, who will pop borders eot. One option is to pull back and scout up to our northwest out of vision range of retep. Another is to screw vision and head straight north. The third option is to head southwest and approach him from another direction. In the latter two cases we'd have the option of trying to mess with his micro by moving the scout onto his best resource. If he does have a 4h setup though, which would explain why he moved t0, this would only delay him for 4t while he builds a warrior... and him building a warrior is bad for us, so this has questionable utility.

It seems there are going to be three stages of potential conflict in quick succession: scout, warrior, bronze. We need to choose whether to play offensively or defensively in each case, and how hard to gun for the last. Retep will have a tempo advantage, and quite probably a production advantage, in the warrior and bronze phases, because of his start (mining/EXP/presumed plains hill). Meanwhile, we'll have an advantage in unit quality in those phases, once we reach them, due to AGG and Zulu.

Honestly, I think the map is somewhat unreasonable. I don't care much about players being close, but the sheer shitiness of the land means that we don't have many viable second city locations (read: there aren't any we can see, but there could be some in the fog). The only problem is that the food resources look to be closer to other people, because I fully expect Serdoa put someone to our north. And that means we're stuck either racing settlers to take food that is going to be hard to settle for and improve, or playing OCC if other players settle towards us first (which will happen if we go for Pottery first, at that point we cannot build a settler for quite a while).

I wouldn't actually care if we saw some food nearby. As it is I think we might as well wreck someone else's game.

The MM for going Mining > BW first. It's not that pretty (I actually prefer the MM for Pottery first, it just isn't that safe with Retep as a neighbour), but the gist of it is that there is a size 4 capital that can 2 pop slave out a settler or a worker, or an impi if it turns out we settled on copper, eot T28 or T29 using 1 forest chop. Two workers, eot T23 and eot T26. The eta on the warriors can be altered as needed, depending on others actions, but no one in their right minds should try to engage in warrior battles with an aggressive leader, especially not when paired with Zulu. Mining eot T11, BW eot T25, Wheel eot T28. If worker double slaved T28, settler due eot T32. The micro breaks down around T28, there are a lot of options at this point.

Largest problem, if we had started Mining, rather than Wheel, would have wasted slightly fewer worker turns. Would have been more difficult to get a second worker out eot T28 though.

Also, Serdoa probably owes me (and you) for PB8. So...suck it and see, I suppose.
