[PB65 - Cornflakes] Rising from the Ashes

I may have given SD an opening to raze a coastal city if he has a GG onboard his galley banghead I thought about the land > promote to Morale trick right as I hit end turn. It’s not my best coastal city but it does have 900 GPP accumulated. I could easily have covered it with another unit just to be safe.

I was not punished for my inaccuracy. SD broke through my blockade and landed a Cataphract next to the city but apparently did not have his GG onboard. I now have 4 Camel Archers out of my Heroic Epic which can take C2/Formation and get 65% odds against C2 Cataphracts.

I traded 2 triremes for 3 but have one already completed in Weakest Link that can take out one of SD’s wounded (0.9/2) and even the score. I also have 2 more coming from the west which will be able to reach and defend the crabs 1SE of Resource Base, on the western side of the screenshot, before his galley can pillage it.

Also shown in the screenshot: GPerson rolled Prophet which will finally build the Christian shrine for 30 base GPT, 60 with multiplier buildings. That will bump me up to 50% slider and essentially equate to 60 hpt in the near term while I’m building wealth, then half a Camel Archer > Cavalry upgrade per turn once I reach Military Tradition.

Also I compared the cost of Philosophy + Liberalism and it is actually cheaper to just straight research MT.

I have decided to clear Printing Press (this turn)and Replaceable Parts (3 turns) first for the bonus tile yields before Nationalism, and then use the Great Engineer for Taj instead of Replaceable Parts bulb. That scenario gives me the best overall timing on the end-of-GA civics swap corresponding with Military Tradition, as well as ensuring that I won’t miss Taj to a rapid build by MJMD. And since I have research visibility on MJMD and he has to get Philosophy first I have a turn of advanced notice. So even if he gets a Great Engineer himself I should be able to secure it regardless.

Last turn had every appearance of impending action. In addition to the amphibious Cataphract noted above, I saw this in the north:

MJMD's catapult and knight stacks both advanced, after having spent multiple turns on the prior signed tiles. Their movement was converging on the NW diagonal of Citadel, in sync with Superdeath's counter-clockwise Cataphract crusade. Superdeath again put his workers on MJMD border tiles, guarded this time by 3 Cataphracts. I had 2 options:

1) Hold in place, let SD road that tile, and give him the opportunity to split my defenses ... I only have enough catapults in range to hit one combined stack, so if MJMD landed 1NW of Citadel while SD advanced separately through the roaded tile it could get a little uncomfortable. I'd still likely come out fine, but I would have to eliminate SD's stack with my catapults and then give MJMD the opportunity to use his catapults against Citade.

2) Declare war on MJMD, take out SD's Cataphracts and workers, and thus funnel him to the kill tile 1NW of Citadel.

I took option #2. My pikes had 67% odds on the Cataphracts and I lost 1 exactly in line with the odds, and used an axe for cleanup which I then deleted along with the 2 workers.

At Money SD took the annoying action of pillaging my wheat rant

I sent in a spear at 12%, which did enough damage that my 2nd spear was victorious for another 6 GG points smile After surveying the MJMD and Pindicator  (lack of) forces in the region I peeled off 8 catapults along the YELLOW path within striking distance of the kill tile 1NW of Citadel. I was all set up for another showdown with SD's Cataphract this time with catapults and mixed stack support ... ready for smack down the stack in a "final showdown" ... only for it to fizzle into nothing. SD's Cataphracts continued their Counter-Clockwise Crusade, ending up 1W of Edwin Fox which isn't even in range to hit Citadel "from the fog" if MJMD had advanced. And so MJMD on his part didn't advance, but remained unmoved. I also held in place.

What is SD's target?  Iiam What is his goal?  Iiam

In domestic matters:

We finally build the Christian shrine and the profits are magnificent! Our breakeven rate is now 50% and factoring in the library/university/Oxford bonuses the shrine is worth around 90 net bpt breakeven, a 25% increase overall jive

Printing Press was 1-turned with overflow off Alphabet + Gunpowder
Replaceable parts is a 2.5 turn tech, with this being the first (T172). Completion EOT174.
Nationalism should be 2 turns with the half turn of overflow off RP, EOT176. Taj rush T177.
Rifling in Golden Age will be 4 turns, EOT180 ... 5 turns slippage from initial plan.
Military Tradition will be 3 turns, EOT183 ... 7 turns gain from previous plan.

Superdeath's Cataphracts have disappeared to the east, now just 1 turn short of circumnavigating the globe in their fruitless search for a weakness.

MJMD has not started Philosophy. The only way he can beat me to Taj is if a births a Great Engineer AND 1-turns Philosophy AND 2-turns Nationalism. That should not be feasible. He is near 2000 gold banked so far. "Best Case" Scenario is for him to spend 3 turns of research towards Philosophy > Nationalism, only for me to snipe it from under his fingertips. However the other thing I've been watching is his great people for 3-man GA. Surely he wants to try and get another MoM GA ahead of Nationalism. Based on the military advisor with my full city vision, he has a single Great Scientist which was born somewhere around a half dozen turns ago. If he gets another GP now and maxes a mixed pool on the remaining types he's probably at least 5 turns away from that, and this would require him spending the (hypothetical) Great Engineer on the MoM GA rather than rushing Taj. In all likelihood he will continue saving gold over the next couple turns while I'm researching Nationalism, then turn on his own research towards one of the military techs riding "just" a MoM GA.

I think my policy after unlocking Rifles + Cavalry will be to swap into full war civics of Nationhood and Police State. Draft 3 rifles per turn, and put all my production into an average of 4 Cavalry per turn. Drafting will tank my research capacity but I will have already reached critical mass to where I can absorb and incorporate new territory without having to worry about tech. This is a case of maximizing research while teching, and then going all-in on military when conquering. By the time MJMD or Pindicator can match me in military tech I will have an insurmountable army in the field to strike the killing blows.

It is the AP religion so MJMD spread it around. Also that number includes the 100% market + grocer + bank multiplier.

Rifling completed this turn, and I will indeed just barely be able to squeeze Nationalism in 2 turns. I ran a little surplus wealth last turn so that I could convert some of the queues to research this turn.

Rifling in 3 turns after that if I max wealth, or more likely 5 turns if I build muskets for queue-upgrade (which will result in me actually getting Riflemen in the field quicker)

Also SD's cataphracts are still out of sight. Next turn or the turn after they could appear again at Gross Profit. Since it will be a couple days before I play the next turn I'm putting this here as a reminder for myself to shift a couple more Camel Archers into the eastern staging tile for a little extra insurance smile

Do you have a GE for Taj? You probably wrote that somewhere but I can't recall.
