Epic Eight - Potluck - Info Thread

Well it can't get worse than that, right? lol

Look on the bright side. If that does happen, you'll not only be able to see what various humans did, from which you can learn, but you'll also be ABLE to see what the AI did with your civ and start location, many times over. How many games do you get that many opportunities to learn?

If you're unfamiliar with the Civ3 Epics, here's the original Potluck event:

I've learnt something from every Epic that I've played. And I'm very grateful for the opportuinity to be able to learn.
In all the other previous versions of Civ I have never got past the middle difficulty levels. Now I am a much better player than I ever was and getting more enjoyment out of this version than I did out of the earlier ones and I did get a load of enjoyment out of them.
I am very grateful for all the time and effort that goes into setting these up and all the reporting.

As Garath clarified, that's not the case for this Epic. However, the Civ 3 Epics did indeed include a game fitting that description. So come back in about a year for the Civ 4 version of Epic Thirty-five. nod

A request for further clarification on the early war rule: the actual text from the other thread is "You may not declare war on any rival prior to 1000BC". Does this mean we have free rein against any AI who declares on us?

Yes.

Assuming you don't abuse the daylights out of the spirit of the game, though. If you go in and make about forty "arrogant demands" for techs, right after grabbing Alphabet with the Oracle in 1500BC, you'll be flagged for a flagrant foul.

I hope that's clear enough. lol

Judging from the signup thread, that's a lot of dice you have to roll! :-)

Personally, I would run a query against the forum database to generate a list of users who posted in that thread, cross reference against the email addresses supplied per user, manually scan the thread for any email address that differ from the default, sort the names "randomly" (e.g. by the second letter of the username or something), and then use excel or something to assign the civs alternately per username. It could just as easily be done randomly, but I like even distributions lol

Then again, the real bummer will be editing the initial save files and emailing them out.

Yes, the trials and tribulations of organizing events.

Gris and I have not decided who does the actual rolling. Obviously, it's my duty unless she wants it. She's got enough work sending out 70+ emails, one at a time! eek

Interesting.

However, Potluck has never provided even distribution or pseudo-random automation. This is the ONE instance of Civ gaming where you are promised (and delivered) bona fide random physical dice rolls to decide your fate.

Sometimes purity is worth a little extra effort. Not knowing if you are the only person playing your civ, or one among twenty, is part of the event. smile
