The shirt made it onto the People of Walmart page. Clearly, they don't understand the reference, which was my point:

Clearly, they don't understand the reference, which was my point: Yes, but it's not really a civilization reference either, is it? It just refers to the fact that the Pyramids were a huge investment at the time and would never have been built without slaves, which is a commonly known historical fact. That doesn't make the T-shirt funny, though.
I have to run.
Quote:and would never have been built without slaves, which is a commonly known historical fact. It's actually not a fact, it's a common myth and contrary to the truth as Pyramids were not build by slaves. ![]() (except in my latest Civ4 game of course ![]()
Here's a long article for those truly interested in who built the pyramids:
http://harvardmagazine.com/2003/07/who-b...e-pyramids Call me a historical skeptic but I think what this proves is that it was not ONLY slaves who built the pyramids. I would not be surprised at all if some slave labor was still used. Also, generally speaking, the modern notion of slavery is perceived primarily through the lense of African slavery. Ancient world slavery was often a very different type of slavery than the horrible slavery of the Americas. (Not that I would say it was good, either, just a different thing)
Since we're on the Pyramids topic, here's a cool video I came across a few weeks ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lasCXujNPfs It's talking about how we still have no idea how exactly they got the blocks all the way to the top, but the video is about a theory attempting to explain it... Interesting stuff. |
