I really like the system we're using in PBEM37, and I think the above simplification would work well (we have a number of proposals, including OB stuff and war declarations that might get a little confusing down the line). It allows for minor cooperation and better signalling than standard AI diplo. It also takes minimal time.
I'm cautiously interested in playing, depending on the setup. I really like the above diplo system, fine with everything else. I think balance could be an issue, not so much because I'm afraid of losing but because I might unintentionally give my neighbours an unfair advantage by sucking. It would be nice if the map could address this to an extent so weak players give everybody an advantage rather than their neighbours. The most interesting games to follow seem to be the ones that have a pretty even skill distribution. But if you want to try an uneven game with handicaps, that could be a lot of fun too. I don't think an uneven game without handicaps would be much fun personally.
I'm not sure how to do a rebalanced snake pick. Have the game admin decide on civ/trait bans for each player?
