[SPOILERS] Small Wunders and Izzy of Inca: The fat lady sings

Lol! Well I wish we could see us at the bottom of everyone's pre-game power rankings. I'm sure no offense is intended. I can be Jim Carrey and you're the sidekick here. So what do you think our chances are of winning this game, about one in a thousand? lol

LEADER/CIV:

The process voted on to use for leader/civ generation is as follows:

Quote:Day 1 - generate 17 random pairings and post in team threads. Team responds yea or nay. Yea leaders/civs are removed.
Day 2 - repeat for all nay teams. Again, yeas are removed.
Day 3 - double nay teams are auto-assigned

Your first generated Leader/Civ combination is:

Julius Caesar of Rome

Please state in bold in your thread whether you want to keep or reroll this combination. If you do not keep it, you can have up to 2 more combinations generated for you.

Wow... restricted leaders are off, right? lol

My first immediate thought was reroll the hell out of this, but it's not my final decision.

Let's review:

Fishing + Mining are good but situational. If we get a fish in the BFC it's off to the races. RBMod has hunting and AH switched up, so we wouldn't get screwed on an animal start, unless it's deer. Hunting is a mandatory early tech now it seems... even horses require it. So I don't like that we have no food tech unless we get a seafood start. We also only have 90 beakers to start, 40 for fishing and 50 for mining. Agri, wheel, and now hunting are 60 beakers, so we're a little behind on research from the word "Go". If fishing is not needed (extremely possible) then we're very behind.

So relative to BTS, I think Rome's techs are relatively worse. Mind you they're nowhere near as bad as BTS Arabia. lol

The Praetorian is now strength 7. Are they even good in RBMod? Especially without Aggr, having to go for iron to pay more for a unit that flat-out loses to an axe seems a bit much. They're still archer crushers, but having to get iron early is a huge gamble, and we might not even have it near!

The forum gets a buff to 35% Great Person points. This basically means a specialist produces 4 instead of 3. This is ok, but we have no synergy for it. I can't get too excited here.

ORG now get double production on Libraries. This is nice!

IMP gets a very mild buff, 60% production on settlers instead of 50%. Cheap customs houses are just a fun change and pretty pointless. I'm not sure this is enough to make it a good trait. It saves hammers in the cities building settlers, but what you really want is to save them in the settled cities, since getting ahead of the growth curve early will snowball the city forward.

So I'm leaning pretty strongly to reroll (but not in bold yet). Plunder, do you have any desire to lurk a Rome / Rome thread? lol

Rome is not that bad right? Although I can imagine better starts. I'm not sure what the RB-mod does exactly, gotta read though it at some point.
I don't think the forum is very good special building, and the special units are somewhat situational. But you're with 18 player on a map? I have no idea how crowded it will be (I didn't read the organisation threat(?) very carefully yet =( ) but if it is crowded it might be interesting.

I can't really add too much to the conversation since I didn't read up on the changes in RB-mod.

Ok, the exact settings are at the beginning of the settings discussion post. In the latest RBMod that will be used: "ORG: reverted to base BtS". So no library production bonus. That makes this combination weaker than I discussed.

It's not that Rome is weak, civs and leaders are ostensibly a lot more balanced in RBMod. It's just that ideally there would be more synergy. E.g. the forum would be a much better building as PHI or EXP. (EXP gets cheap markets in the latest RBMod apparently.)

This will be on a huge map, so I think the relative space for each player will be similar to the other PB games, certainly at least 100+ land tiles per player.

Pros / Cons:

+ Fast opening with a nice advantage getting the 2nd and 3rd cities out.
+ Praetorian is a reason not to go to war with us early.
+ Techs are very good for a seafood start.
+ Org is still a nice late game trait.
+ Can research BW immediately.

- No food techs if we don't have seafood in the capital.
- We're behind on total beaker count.
- Required to tech and hook up iron to have an early game advantage, which is risky.
- Get a target on our backs to choke and deny iron if possible.
- I don't even know if the Praetorian is worth going for at strength 7 without Aggressive. Post maces it's a relatively useless unit.
- The forum is not exciting, and has no synergy.
- We don't have anything that helps new cities grow (well other than cheap lighthouses).
- We already have an ORG leader in PB11.

Hey WilliamLP,

Are you sure that you're up for a second ded-lurker while going it alone? lol Hi Plunder, fellow ded-lurker.

I think that you're along the same thought lines, but I'll add my $0.02 anyway which is: Rome in RB Mod is not worth it.

Rome is almost always a target pre-Iron working as you pointed out. And I don't think that the Praet is even a great military unit. Shock HA have 68% odds over the praet as do C1 Axes. If its still 45H and loses to a 35H axe and loses to a 50H HA and has one movement mobility then I wouldn't be building a whole lot of these.

Still reading the RB Mod updates,...so I'll add more when I'm done. Julius Caesar doesn't seem good enough to make up for the target on our backs so my instinct would be to re-roll.

Good to have you aboard. A military and strategic advisor ded-lurker is perfect here. I love the precise percentage breakdowns. Oh and I didn't even know Praets were 45 instead of 40 hammers for a sword... All signs seem to point to them being over-nerfed in RBMod.

I was nearly 100% sold before your input but now it's a sure thing.

How did they guess my LoL & KGS username????

Yeah, same here. I clicked on page 2 but realized I was in the wrong place before I absorbed any information.

Just an FYI,...I'm lightly ded-lurking Oxy in PB11 so no spoiler info please.

Nice to see you here mindy =)
It does make it hard for me to give good advise now, since I noticed you are a very active ded-lurker =D And rather experienced in the game too =D
