Because we might as well lurk it! [lurkers thread, no players]

Apparently it's dangerous to speak either of the Devil or PB14 around these parts.

All right, but just remember that we're having fun (at least, I am) with PB 14, so we're trying to do our best there, especially with the limited time I have. smile

Honestly, so long as you are all having fun then who cares if the game is being played in an (objectively) skillful manner? It's not like playing CIV is anyone's job.

Realms Beyond is extremely elitist. I suppose every community has it's faults.

Indeed. But I don't think that's one of the community's faults. More of an asset.

Ehh. It can be a little cruel. It's possible to be elite and proud without being elitist, just hard.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

In what way is elitism an asset?

Cleaner streets. Safer schools. More punctuation. Jowy-types get a lot of funny abuse. Wins all around!

I don't see how you get those things by thinking you're better than other people. And look! More punctuation isn't always good:

"It's"? Every community has it is faults? Really Jowy? nono

I haven't read any of PB14 or this, but I was greatly entertained by the above 19 posts. nod

FWIW, I don't think elitist is an accurate representation. On the whole, I think RB is very welcoming to new players, which is not characteristic of elitists. What we ARE is hyper-critical, which while often entertaining, can also drive people away from the community. Combining that with a vocal handful of the community which is clearly elite, leads to the elitism claim.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?
