[spoilers] Caledorn gets eaten by a ragtag band of riffraff

Argh. No more scouting for me for now. My scout was eaten by a wolf and a lion.

Now, I have no idea how to get some feedback from people here - but I really need some tips, so I'm hoping the questions I ask are answerable by general lurkers.

* My city will grow to size 3 in 3 turns, but my warrior will finish in 1. That means I have 2 more turns before size 3. Is the optimal thing to do to build another warrior before a settler, thus building the settler at size 3, giving me the benefit of both the pastured sheep, cows and the FP - or should I just start the settler right away when the warrior completes?

* There are so many people on RB I don't know, and Q is among them. How can I expect him to behave based on other games he have participated in?

* Should I cottage the FP before mining the plain hill 1N of Amethyst, or is the plain hill mine more important?

* Should I train another scout or should I just use warriors to scout now that my scout is resting in pieces in a lion tummy somewhere west of Amethyst? tongue

Warrior for scouting is better idea generally with huts off. Scout's advantage of being able to move 2 tiles at a time most of the time is nullified by quick death eaten by animals and if you still want to keep your scout alive for longer, you move him like warrior - 1 tile at a turn so you have movement left to run back if you happen to encounter an animal with the first move.

Good point, Mackoti smile Mining wasn't a part of the initial plan, since I just got lucky with that in a hut. Cottage it is!

2metraninja: Given that huts are on though? Wouldn't a scout be better for popping them? Excellent suggestion on how to move a scout - thank you for that smile

The point stays - you have to consider the chance of

- have the chance for finding a hut;
- actually survive till you get there if you move fast (like scout)

If you are to move the scout safe - one tile at a time - he is not much different than a warrior, except that there are times that even the "safe" moving cant guarantee you your scout wont be caught by 2 animals in tight place or by a two-moving animal. Well, popping huts with scouts guarantee you either good outcome or at worst gives you nothing, where with warrior you can pop barbarians and still lose the warrior. Of course, there is no guarantee a warrior will always survive to get to the hut either, despite his bigger strength.

If you ask for my personal style/preference, then I like to use the initial scout as a scout - moving him 2 tiles a turn and accepting the chance he will be killed but hoping that this is risk well worth if it will net me 1-2 huts. Once my initial scout or those who spawn from huts are dead, I dont bother building new ones. If I at all need another scouting unit, it is either warrior, or it is already chariot time.

I'd like to give you feedback but my experience is with FFH/EitB

I guess to really find the optimal play between growth warriors workers and settlers you'd have to sandbox your city and the tiles you work, which is relatively quickly done, but I don't like to do that all the time either, so I just go for my gut and over the thumb kind of decisions.

Player behavior will be similar in my experience, though people might vary in that opinion. Generally speaking I always look out for the civs my neighbors have and try to determine possible strategies based on their traits, that combined with previous experiences should be quite alright. And things like power buildup are obvious, or civs that could use upgrade stats to hide that.

The scouting question is difficult, it usually depends a little on my gameplan and how much scouting I've got done with my first scout. If I really need more information about the map I'll probably build another, huts on is also a reason. But that usually leads to gambling a bit with few warriors early, so it depends what neighbors you have. If you gamble with warriors consider putting a turn into a warrior and then build something else, so you can emergency whip it.

Have fun!

So yeah, you hadn't updated here in a month so I just went with my best judgment. wink

When I entered the game you were building Vultures in all cities (no Barracks). I presume this was some anti-barb decision as you're not in a position to rush anyone.

General evaluation: turn 61, 3 cities, 3 workers. Needs more settlers and workers! smile

Swapped the cottage tile from your western city to your capital, and started building a Worker in the size 3 western city (a Vulture just finished). Queued up a Settler to start after the Vulture finishes in your capital, to go for the City 4 location you have marked (you should probably explore the surroundings before settling though). Reluctantly left the Vulture in the southern city building, as I made a decision not to interfere with any builds in progress - though you might want to consider building something else afterwards.

According to the demographics you're pretty much bang on the rival average in most categories.

Turn 63

Uh-oh, I don't know if he'll make it...

(He did.) smile

Started Settler in the capital. Plains-hill mine will be completed in a couple of turns and citizens will switch to work that instead of the grassland-forest.

Worker on the forest 2W of the capital can finish a chop next turn. Stopped him so you can decide which city the chop should go into (by switching control of the tile in the city screen). Settler or Worker? Could go either way.

Turn 64

With Maths in we need a new tech path. Sailing isn't a bad choice for Lighthouses and potential Moai. Mysticism also isn't a bad choice since it allows for cheap border expansions (if you don't want to slog-build Libraries), and is on the path to Ziggurats and Hereditary Rule. Selected Sailing for now, but used the opportunity to go for a 0% research turn in case you want to change the path.

Decided to use the chop to speed the Worker in the western city. That allows us access to even more chops quicker.

Barb Warrior approaching from the NW, fortunately we have a Vulture nearby that can whack him on the head next turn.
