Rome most likely. I think. Maybe. Ancient rome, first thing close to a nation...(ancient greece more a bunch of city-states occationally warring). Also 1920's, rise of facism (extreme nationalism..?).

Others:
Greece - nationalist party or something ruling there.
Shot - nationalism and draft leads to shots being fired. Serbian nationalist started WWI with some shots.

If the words are Hook and Shot, you could perhaps clue Zelda. But then there's a Link on the way.

I think it's indeed hook and shot (perhaps hook and hand). I know the "why not use X for such clues, instead" argument may fail, but I'm pretty sure TT could come up with a better clue for Hand and Shot than Harpoon.

I concur with cycle & angel after keniggots.
Eisenhower called D-Day landings the start of the "crusade in europe" during WWII, but pistol isn't sufficently WWII or military enough to be considered.
