This is, of course, why we don't play diplo games. Feel bad for Charriu that that will likely be the general conclusion of this, rather than regenerating this as a format.

I think there’s some hope for diplo games. I don’t think I’ll play in them because I got my fill years ago, and this one isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for how I should spend my time. I didn’t intend to play in this game long-term as I was originally going to be a 2-3 week sub until the other player just never returned. My “mistake” was growing attached enough to this game during that time to continue on due to a fun leader/gameplan and a map that I liked.
But I think they could happen again. I suspect the lurker sentiment around what Mjmd did is pretty near-universal. It’s hard not to notice his thread and the lurker thread are constantly pinging even when he’s not logging in to play, and that no lurkers have even mildly pushed back against me (while a few have bluntly stated in here that it’s scummy), so it’s not hard to read the public view. I expect he’ll win and I expect that win will be viewed as fairly hollow given that he did what he did while already leading the game, and that general consensus will drive people in future iterations to be more careful about such extreme stabs. I would definitely lurk a diplo game as long as it's done in the publicly viewable discord format which I think is a really neat way to follow the game.

Eh, honestly, this game was reinforcing for me why I don't play diplo games long before the stab...that is way way too much time commitment now.

It was mostly fine riiiiight up until it was time for some conflict. Which only took this long because the map had 80+ peacefully attainable city sites and high maintenance. But as soon as it's conflict time, the time commitment jumps up a lot. At least, it does if you're trying to win, which I'm unfortunately hard-wired in a way to make that unavoidable.

Winning is when everyone has fun and then goes home to their loved ones safe and sound.

I think this was explored in the movie Wargames.

The discord is a really cool setup.

I Wonder if the commitment would be manageable in a smaller setup. Maybe similar to the always war game with very few cities per player so the game time commitment stays low and time can be spent on Diplomacy instead.
Of course that would be a challenge for map design to encourage diplomacy with basically no guaranteed territory
