XCOM 2 - Ironman Again

Noticed something interesting when trying to grind out the first mission on Legendary. It seems like the game will punish you if you stay in one place and overwatch when not concealed. I took a rooftop where I had around 90% odds to hit with normal shots. I waited for the Sectoid pod to patrol into me, and missed all four shots on it. After handling that, I employed the same strategy for the last pod. It didn't patrol into us, so I sent one guy to lure them in. Again missed all overwatch shots. Then they killed my lure from almost max range while he was in full cover. With the penalty to overwatch accounted for, the chance to miss all seven of those shots is 0.09%. Could be a massive coincidence of course, but I might investigate this tongue

EDIT: Aw, results from further testing tell me that it was just really bad luck. Well, it's probably a good thing that it doesn't work like that.

So should I buy XCOM 2 for £18 or XCOM 1 complete pack for £5?

Depends, if you want more fast-paced gameplay get 2, if you want slower gameplay get 1.
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!

That price for the complete pack is insanely good. Definitely get it if you're at all interested in XCOM.

Good news: The game continues!

Bad news: But it might not after this.

Here's a teaser of the upcoming disaster:

Base Management: (Not) The End!

This is not ideal! Even with the AWC staffed, we will be missing many of our best soldiers for the next few missions.

Woot! The game continues. However the timer is very short. It seems to indeed be based on when the next pip will come online - which could mean that a major breakthrough (2 pips) might just skip the timer altogether!

I went for a quick visit to the Black Market and sold some corpses, to get enough supplies to build the Shadow Chamber.

Then we headed straight for the Alien Facility to keep the campaign alive.

Here's the team. RefSteel joins his first mission, and Pindicator returns for his second. Note that I forgot to give the medkit to Rho frown
We only had one healthy Grenadier (well, relatively healthy, even he is shaken). Thankfully we have two armors that come with a Rocket Launcher attached.
RefSteel has a mindshield cause he's new so has a low Will, and Brian Shanahan has one because of his shaken status. Pindicator is holding a gas grenade, which might seem strange, but that's just in case a Ruler shows up.
If we fail the mission, we might technically get another shot at it, but we'd only have squaddies and not even a full team to work with. Should be accurate to say that this is make or break time.

Mission 21: Operation Hell Shadow

This time we have to go well inside the facility to bomb it.

We made blue moves and overwatched every turn. Starting to hear enemies ahead.

Made it all the way to the edge of the cliff. We keep hearing enemies though, I think there's a pod just past the cliff in the fog.

We got to the edge without contact, then these guys walked in. Not close enough to spot us though. The big one is a new type.

Old Harry set up the Kill Zone. Rho stays as back-up (flash bang and mimic beacon), Brian starts the engagement, everyone else is on overwatch.
Sadly I couldn't get the second Codex with the Acid Grenade. With a frag I could, but I want to inflict Acid Burns. If the Codex splits, maybe both of them will have the status effect.

Aw, both the Codex and the new Andromedon are immune. At least we shred some armor.

Taking shots at the Andromedon: Old Harry misses, RefSteel hits, Brick hits, Pindicator hits. The Andromedon goes down!

And now it's back to full HP  yikes

Old Harry takes two more shots at the Codexi(?), hitting one and missing the other. Dragon Rounds don't work on them either.

FUCK! There was another pod that activated. And we couldn't even kill the first one. Only Rho has a move left, we'll have to survive attacks by two full pods.

All we can do is throw down the Mimic Beacon and hope. This might be it for the campaign if we get slaughtered here  alright

Three enemies attacked the Mimic Beacon! It then disappeared. All of them hit it, even shots that would have had bad odds.
Someone told me something about the Mimic Beacons back when I first tried them, I think it was that enemies can't miss them, which certainly seems to be true.

One Codex used the AoE attack on us. It hit 4 of us. That's quite bad.. If we reload, we can't move if we want to shoot too, which means we will get hit by the after-effect.

Another Codex went into overwatch, and the Andromedon rushed right into the cloud on top of the hill. Luckily he wasn't close enough to attack anyone.
We survived that turn, but now we need to do something about all these enemies right in our face.

First things first, we have a flash bang. We can hit all the enemies on the ground. So the game plan is to at least kill the Andromedon this turn and flash bang the others.
Rho has to move out of the cloud though. And to do that, she has to get shot at. A chance to dodge is better than guaranteed damage from the cloud, but she gets hit anyway.

She flash banged all five. It even works against the Codex type.
Btw notice how this time, the huge purple cloud continues to be visible even on our turn. It must have bugged out last mission.

Even with no ammo, we can still take pistol shots. Old Harry hit it for 5 with Lightning Hands. I saved Brick's shots for now, she might want to shoot at enemies who are down the cliff.
Pindicator was up next with another free action. He used Rage Strike to hit the Andromedon for 7 damage. Since it's a free action, he can move back out of the cloud and even shoot at enemies.

Brian Shanahan was outside the cloud so he got the honors. One Andromedon down, 5 enemies up.

At this point I get a little more daring. I'm sending Pindicator down to ground level to take a rocket shot at the group of enemies.

He gets a badass shot through the poison fumes left behind by the Andromedon.

Boom! Three enemies are hit by a rocket.

Brick used one of her two free pistol shots to kill the low health Codex.

RefSteel moves to the edge of the cliff and sends down our second rocket.

It's a crit! I didn't even know that was an option! It did 7 damage against all of them, which was the max at normal damage range.

Old Harry moved out of the cloud and finished off an enemy, Brick did the same. We've done it. Just one enemy left alive.

On their turn, it did nothing. We then killed it off, giving the final hit to RefSteel. Next: Into the facility itself!

There was no handy entrance, so we made our own. Not sure what's going on with the window.

A battle scanner spotted a pod on the other side of the facility. There are windows though so we'll have to fight them. Let's get everyone closer.

We spotted not one, but two turrets on top of the building. However we couldn't see them after the activation cutscene.
I'm not sure whether they activated because there was vision on the way, or if they saw us on the destination tile and we just can't see them, but in any case I moved again to avoid them. It worked.

When we moved to full cover by the facility wall, we activated the enemy pod. Our odds weren't great.. 40-50% on the Heavy Lancer, but only 20% on the other two!
On top of that, we're out of explosives, so we can't even blow up their cover.

Anyway let's kill the one that we can kill. Brian Shanahan shot at it and missed. Brick gave it a try and missed. RefSteel tried and missed.
Finally, Pindicator went for it and he missed too. Who knew that a regular pod would be so much trouble? Old Harry set up the Kill Zone and Rho overwatched, hopefully the two can kill the Heavy Lancer when it charges at us.

Old Harry to the rescue, once again. He kills it with one shot.

Pindicator takes a huge hit despite being in full cover. Old Harry avenges him with 8 in return (for some reason the animation played after his attack, when it should have before).
The Shieldbearer stayed put and used his special ability to give them both shields.

The best shot we had was a 50% with Old Harry. He missed, so doubt we can kill them this turn.

Brian Shanahan used Suppression on the Officer to ruin his hit chances. Pindicator ran in to get in grenade range and threw a gas grenade at the Shieldbearer.
Rho used Aid Protocol to increase Pindicator's defense since he was now in only half cover. Others overwatched.

The Officer missed Pindicator as expected. The Shieldbearer would have a better chance. It moved to a new cover and took a shot, but missed.

Never take cover next to an explosive barrel  rolf
Brian sent a barrage at the barrel with expected results. Brick finished off the Shieldbearer who was now without cover.

Old Harry took another 50% try at the Officer. This time he hit, taking it down to 1 HP. Rho used Combat Protocol to finish it off.

Some loot dropped, but we would have to walk through the poison and risk activating more enemies. No thanks!

Instead, we planted the bomb and got the hell out of there. Mission complete!

Both Squaddies got well-deserved promotions and from our more experienced soldiers Brick got one as well.
Pindicator was given Phantom to be our backup scout in case David goes down at some point. Though I forgot we recovered Dp and he has it too IIRC.

RefSteel unlocked a hidden AWC perk after her first mission! Welcome to the team. She was also given Medical Protocol and will be built as our healer.

Brick continued down the pistol tree. This perk would have been amazing to have in the double pod engagement we just went through.

Safe for a while longer. Hopefully whatever comes out of the Shadow Chamber will help us out, because getting to the next Alien Facility in time seems unlikely.
Brian Shanahan also recovered from his Shaken status after not getting hit. Might be the first time he comes back healthy. May it be the first of many!

Pre-mission
Wait, this mission was make-or-break for the campaign and X-Com command intentionally sent a Ref clone on it?!  I mean ... happy to serve my planet and all!  I'm sure I will do an excellent job and not get anyone myself the whole squad all of humankind wiped out when I miss an easy flank shot and/or accidentally trigger a giant mechanized pod with my mighty trusty possibly a little helpful? Gremlin!

Post-mission
We ... we made it? And I hit like two important shots? And apparently I'm good at a couple things all of a sudden?

I ... I've gotta be dreaming!

You are not just good RefSteel, but special too! I just realized something when playing the next mission. I thought you learned Lighting Hands as the extra perk. Nope! It's actually Lightning Reflexes. A perk from the previous game that does not exist in XCOM 2! Except, as it turns out, as a hidden perk you might get with the AWC.

Wow -- I didn't realize that it wasn't even available in the new game!  So I'm pretty sure the conversation with the trainer in the Advanced Warfare Center went something like this:

AWC Trainer:  Okay, let's see what kind of potential you've got, kid.

Ref:  Hmm, what do I want?  What do I ... ooh, ooh, I've got one!

AWCT:  It ... doesn't work that way.

Ref:  Okay, okay, so you know how when a giant alien has the squad pinned down with overwatch?

AWCT:  I'm ... familiar with...

Ref:  And everybody's like, "Just send the Ref clone out.  Let the alien shoot at her!"

AWCT:  ... I'm pretty sure you guys sent Rho actually.

Ref:  So when we do that, I want the alien to always miss!

AWCT:  ... it ... really doesn't work that way.

Ref:  Don't care.

AWCT:  Like, I don't think that's even possible.

Ref:  Don't care.

AWCT:  All we have are legends from the war twenty years ago that anyone's even ever...

Ref:  Wait, we are fighting a war against literally space aliens and you're doubting our war legends?

AWCT:  ...  Fine.
