RBP2 Lurker Discussion Thread - No Players!

Thank you, thank you VoiceOfUnreason for your post in Spulla's thread. I'm going to have to stop lurking there lest the hypocrisy cause me to have some sort of rant-induced aneurism.

Seriously do they have no idea how diplomacy works? I could type an essay on all the ways that their patronizing sermonizing and selective condemnation of their opponents conflicts with their own in-game activity and previous rationales, but it wouldn’t be anything that hasn’t been noted here already.

To be fair, they are winning the game - so either their diplomacy works better than we all think, or they simply don't need to do better. smile
There are two kinds of fools. One says, "This is old, and therefore good." And one says, "This is new, and therefore better." - John Brunner, The Shockwave Rider

If there were tech-trading on 90% of the issues would go away. Spulla would get frozen out of tech trades and would not be imbalacing the game. Also, any one with a decent core would be threat (Munro!); destorying the possiblity someone still having something but not being to do anything.

Love those cross-posts XD.

If tech trading were on they'd be handling their diplomacy much differently, I'd wager.

I think the latter is true and they did not need to do better for this game.

Nakor's been very weaselly in the past, but their latest message arguing against funding indian research comes across as reasonable and candid. A bit of a knee-jerk reaction by Sullla there, IMO.
I have to run.

conspiring with other teams to stop another team getting a wonder didn't seem so bad in the Apolyton demogame... http://www.garath.net/Sullla/Civ4/ADG4.html , where team Realms Beyond convinced Imperio's Ally PAL to stop them from getting benefit from the Oracle. This seems like an almost identical situation.

It's all perspective eh? To be fair to Sulla, the fact that he posts so much more than anyone else, and in more depth and frankness, does set him up to seem hypocritical more than others on the forum. I'd be amazed if anyone could post as Sulla does and not at some point come across as hypocritical.

And in regards to tech trading: if tech trading were to be on, there would also be a much greater incentive for other teams to work with Sulla too. You don't think tech trading wouldn't tie Korea and Mali to India even more? I would reckon that if tech trading was on, Slaze would also have been much more interested in helping India back during the dogpile, and India help Inca during their wars.

Agreed. I also think he's going to some effort to come up with interesting material for his updates for the benefit of the lurkers, hence the editorializing. Some turns just aren't that eventful so adding some opinion on the actions of the other teams is a good way to add more content to his posts on the slow turns. When he calls people out for what he perceives as shady diplomacy, I don't detect any personal condemnation, I think he's just being realistic about who his friends are and aren't in the context of this game.
